(More information is available in the SBC Enrolment Guide.)
The first year comprises the Year 1 English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programme, designed to give you the necessary skills in all four language areas (reading, writing, listening and speaking). This is carefully integrated with the content modules in Physics and Mathematics to fully prepare you for years 2-4 of the degree.
In the second year, you will be introduced to the core modules in mechanical engineering, including mechanical principles, dynamics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and mechanics of materials and structures. You will also learn Mechatronics, which teaches you the necessary understanding for integrating your mechanical designs into the industrial environment.
In the third year, modules for this programme include Materials and Processes, Engineering Practice, Mechatronics, Mechanical and Thermals Systems, and Design and Manufacture. Students will also study advanced Engineering Mathematics and be introduced to modelling and simulation.
In the fourth year, you must complete modules including Engineering Analysis with simulation software, Dynamics and Control and Industrial Management. Students will also complete their final-year project.
A range of delivery styles are incorporated into the course. You will attend lectures heavily supported by small-group tutorial work, led by academic staff and encouraged to develop your thoughts and ideas. Delivery is interactive in a number of ways. All modules make use of the virtual learning environment, where online learning resources can be accessed to support your work and to fit in with your personal workload schedule.
The evaluation of your knowledge and comprehension typically involves a mix of examinations and coursework. Some subjects may incorporate alternative assessment methods like online class tests. An integral part of your academic journey is the final year project. This project offers an opportunity for you to work autonomously under the mentorship of your supervisor, significantly contributing to your final grade.
Mechanical Engineering graduates are in high demand in various sectors due to their comprehensive skill set. They are frequently recruited to strengthen sales and marketing teams, and their technical expertise and strong interpersonal skills make them strong candidates for leadership roles. Employers widely recognise and value their mechanical engineering degrees, whether they work for small startups or large multinational corporations. The diverse skills of these graduates also open doors for them in consultancy firms, government agencies, and public utilities, offering a wide range of exciting career opportunities.
