
The Sino-British College was established in 2006 by the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) as a partnership with world-class universities in UK including University of Sheffield, University of Leeds, University of Bradford, University of Huddersfield, Leeds Beckett University, Liverpool John Moores University, University of Salford, and Sheffield Hallam University. SBC's vision is to be an international learning hub, attracting and supporting diverse students and faculty, developing responsible, innovative, and socio-culturally engaged global leaders. SBC’s mission is to cultivate students who are socio-culturally empathetic international ambassadors, aware of their responsibilities both within society and the workplace, who drive forward innovation and enterprise globally.
SBC is located in USST's Fuxing Road Campus, one of the most attractive areas in downtown Shanghai. The campus is home to seven century-old buildings, forming the largest cluster of historical architecture of any university in downtown Shanghai, harmoniously integrated with the Hengfu Historical and Cultural Districts. The library, built in 1914, is a designated Shanghai Excellent Historical Building. The campus exemplifies Shanghai-style cultural heritage, showcasing a unique blend of history and modernity.
USST, as a key university of Shanghai, and with the support of the Shanghai Municipal Government, co-established SBC to thoroughly implement the Shanghai Municipal Government's strategy of revitalizing the city through science and education, and to cultivate the talents in short supply in advanced manufacturing and modern service industries. SBC was fully licensed by Ministry of Education (MoE) of the People's Republic of China in September 2006. It was the first Chinese-foreign cooperation to adopt a one-to-N Consortium Modeland functions as a secondary college within USST. SBC has fully implemented bachelor's degree and international bachelor's degree education.
SBC became an advanced signatory to PRME in 2019. In 2021, SBC officially joined the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) as a member. In 2022, SBC was officially accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) for two programmes in the School of Engineering and Computing: Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. This was a significant milestone in SBC's history recognising its development and is a crucial symbol of the college as a leading international college. In 2023, SBC's English for Academic Purposes (EAP) module was awarded the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL) Validated Programme. This status was renewed for 2 consecutive years. This shows that our programme and the School are of high quality and meet internationally recognised standards in language teaching. The qualification obtained by EAP students at the Sino-British College are recognized by more than 60 universities around the world.
Degree programmes are taught entirely in English across the whole spectrum of School of Business and Management, School of Engineering and Computing, and School of Languages, Education and Cultures by a highly qualified academic team comprising 70 lecturers with international teaching backgrounds from 20 different countries and regions, International lecturers account for 70% of the academic team. SBC is one of the few joint institutes with Free-entry enrolment qualification. Currently, SBC has 1,800 full-time undergraduate students.
SBC currently offers full undergraduate degree programmes taught entirely in English, and also offers UK partner universitiespathway programmes (2+2, 2+1+1, 1+3) for students to study for a UK degree at one of the UK partner universities. Our pathway students can also choose to stay in Shanghaiand earn a Bachelor's degree from the UK partner university. The partnership between USST and the UK partner universities forming the Sino-British College provides students to be Dual-Registered, studying in China and receivingawards from both USST and the UK partner university.
SBC graduates have been very successful in terms of outstanding academic performance and social responsibility. SBC seeks to create and sustain an environment for all students, staff, and stakeholders that is characterised by our commitment to developing three overarching SBC values -responsible leadership, enterprise and innovation, and cultural empathy. Since 2006 the academic and administrative operations of SBC have been underpinned by a strong internationalization strategy. SBC academic programs are taught by Western trained academics who are culturally sensitive to Chinese student's needs – all while adopting an international perspective to promote reform in higher education and pedagogy.
SBC's internationalization strategy underpins high-level international cooperation, educational exchange and internal stakeholder development (i.e. student, staff, faculty and alumni) – that contribute to the national development strategy of Shanghai's municipality to create 'Five Centres' in regional innovation and development. SBC proudly promotes its mission to cultivate students to become international ambassadors of China domestically, in foreign countries, and in multinational corporations. SBC-USST is committed to preparing the next generation of talent to engage in global development initiatives and in mutual cooperation between the east and west.
