From the bustling streets of Shanghai to the vast plains of Russia, cultural exchanges spark unforgettable encounters. In the previous two international student workshops, students introduced Chinese culture and language to their international peers. Before starting the new session, the participants briefly revisited the highlights of the earlier lessons.

Now, boarding the cultural ship once again, the students set sail for the third workshop, embarking on an immersive journey into Russian culture! This time, roles were reversed: Russian international student Luka Kokhanov became the storyteller, guiding everyone into the rich world of Russian culture and language.
First Glimpse into Russian Culture: Discovering the Mysteries and Traditions of Russia
The session opened with Luka presenting a captivating video showcasing Russia’s breathtaking landscapes and vibrant cultural heritage. From the golden domes of the Kremlin to the dreamlike grandeur of the Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg, every frame spoke vividly of Russia’s profound historical legacy. Students marvelled at the scenery, with many expressing a strong desire to experience the solemnity of Red Square and the crystal-clear waters of Lake Baikal in person.
Luka also shared insights into traditional Russian customs, such as the heartfelt “toasts” delivered by elders during New Year celebrations, giving everyone a vivid glimpse into Russian festive traditions.

The Charm of Music and Ballet: Dancing to the Melodies of Tchaikovsky
Luka then introduced some of the most iconic art forms in Russian culture – music and ballet. The enchanting melodies of Tchaikovsky filled the classroom, with highlights from The Nutcracker and Swan Lake capturing the audience’s imagination. Under Luka’s explanation, students gained an understanding of the history of ballet and its classical repertoire.
In addition, Luka introduced traditional Russian folk music. As the lively tunes played, the room was immersed in the unique atmosphere of Russian cultural flair.

The Bridge of Language: Ura! Learning Russian Together and Embracing Cross-Cultural Dialogue
Following the cultural exploration, Luka led a practical Russian language mini-class. From simple greetings such as Привет! (Privet! – Hello) to expressions of gratitude like Спасибо (Spasibo – Thank you), international students enthusiastically practised their pronunciation alongside Luka, filling the room with laughter and joy.
Luka also taught a few interesting Russian phrases and casual expressions, making the learning atmosphere even more relaxed and lively. Many students commented, “Russian may be a bit difficult, but it’s truly fascinating!”
Each international student workshop represents a wonderful cross-cultural journey. From the wit and richness of Chinese, to the melodic elegance of Shanghainese, and now the distinctive charm of Russian, students have experienced the richness and diversity of cultures worldwide. Together, they continue to embody the College’s overarching theme of fostering “Cultural Empathy” through shared learning and exchange.
