2024 SBC Open Day successfully held

On June 22nd, the Sino-British College held its Open Day as scheduled. Over 400 students and parents from across the country visited the beautiful Fuxing Road campus, gaining an immersive understanding of the College's educational philosophy, features, teacher quality and talent development. They experienced the international education characteristics and educational achievements in an all-round way. The event was rich and colorful, including academic demo classes, lectures on growth experience sharing by current students and alumni, free entry enrollment policy, consultation booths by academic staff, student support departments, student societies and campus tour.

Professor Rupert Ward, Executive Dean of SBC, Li Yan, Secretary of the Party Committee of SBC, Professor Shan Yanguang, Vice Dean of SBC, Cai Hui, Deputy Party Secretary and Associate Dean of SBC, faculty representatives, alumni representatives, current student representatives and student volunteers all participated in the event. The welcome ceremony was hosted by Zhao Yihan from the Class of 2023 in Business Management and Lan Junzhe from the Class of 2023 in Events Management.

Professor Rupert Ward warmly welcomed the student visitors and their parents on behalf of the College. He stated that SBC's 1 to N consortium model integrates the advantages of higher education in USST and the UK partner universities. The College always adheres to its three overarching themes, namely Responsible Leadership, Enterprise and Innovation and Cultural Empathy, embedding these throughout the entire educational process. With high-quality educational resources and comprehensive educational platforms, the College promotes the all-round growth and success of every student.

Professors Rupert Ward and Shan Yanguang each delivered wonderful lectures, receiving enthusiastic responses. Professor Rupert Ward introduced the development and characteristics of British higher education, as well as its influence on global higher education. He emphasised that the College provides rich academic resources and talent support for every student, offering broad international perspectives and opportunities for communications. He encouraged the students to fully learn knowledge and enhance academic abilities during their undergraduate studies, in order to lay a solid foundation for further studies at partner universities in the UK.

Professor Shan Yanguang's lecture covered the history of the college, SBC’s educational model, characteristics, academic schools, programmes and pathways, international accreditations, talent development and student growth, titled Inheritance and Innovation, Integration and internationalisation: ‘1 to N’ Consortium Model: SBC's Advantages and Characteristics. He highlighted that SBC, inheriting the time-honoured cultural lineage of the German Medical School for Chinese in Shanghai and the exemplary engineering education of USST, converges high-quality educational resources from both China and the UK, integrates Chinese and British management systems, and innovates its development mechanisms. This approach has cultivated a group of talents with a strong sense of national pride, global vision, and cross-cultural communication skills. Since SBC’s establishment in 2006, the College has actively promoted high-level international cooperation and student exchanges between the two countries, creating a unique path of high-quality internationalisation. SBC has fully played a leading and exemplary role in Sino-foreign cooperative education.

During the Q&A session, Professor Ward and Professor Shan provided detailed answers to the students and parents who wanted to learn more about the Sino-British cooperative educational model of the College.

To further showcase the excellence of SBC students, student representatives Ye Pengpeng, Xue Jin, Liu Xinyue from the Class of 2022 in Business Management, and Ling Hao from the Class of 2023 in Mechanical Engineering shared their experiences in college life. They talked about their learning in class, student society activities, extracurricular life, and stories of personal growth at SBC.

To give students an immersive experience of the tutorial classes taught in entire English, and the educational achievements of the “1 to N educational model, the College provided 12 academic demo classes and keynote lectures, covering three academic schools, four programmes, alumni and current student sharing, and enrolment policies for free entry students. In the Business classes, students and teachers explored how to use finance to grow a business, the PESTEL factors for analyzing the external business environment, and the contemporary exhibition management industry. The Engineering classes led students to explore the design, manufacturing, practical application, and innovative prospects of mechanical and electrical engineering. The English for Academic Program (EAP) class, an essential course for freshmen, provided practical advice on listening, speaking, reading, and writing for professional English learning, laying a solid foundation for further academic studies. Yu Haoyuan, a distinguished alumnus of SBC and Founder of the brand StarryInk, shared the growth story of StarryInk under the nurturing of the College, who was listed in Forbes Asia's 30 Under 30 in 2021. Student representatives Zeng Ruoying, Zhu Mingxia, and Hu Yijie from a SBC’s student team of innovation and entrepreneurship shared their stories with the strong support of USST and SBC, and their experiences in winning various awards such as the National First Prize in the 18th Challenge Cup National College Students Extracurricular Academic and Technological Works Competition Entrepreneurship and the Gold Award in the “Internet+” International Track in Shanghai Division of the China International College Students' 'Internet+' Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition for international projects.

In the lobby of the teaching building, the consultation booths set up by various student societies and student support departments attracted attention of the visitors, fully showcasing the diverse talents of SBC students. The RoboVigor robot team and the StarryInk team, which have won multiple national awards, demonstrated their self-designed and assembled robot cars and self-developed colored ink.

Student volunteers enthusiastically provided guidance and services at various activity points. Once participants in the Open Day themselves before, they are now deeply involved in planning and supporting the activities, inheriting the spirit of dedication, and contributing their zest and energy. They demonstrated responsibility and commitment through their actions. A student visitor from Zhejiang Province excitedly said after the event, I experienced two engineering demo classes and truly felt the international atmosphere of SBC. This is indeed my ideal university, and I look forward to meeting the seniors and peers again in September.
