Professor Rupert Ward and Dr Phillip Williams: a stepping stone to university, how to choose from A-Levels and IB

Professor Rupert Ward and Dr Phillip Williams took part in the panel discussion at Britannica International School, regarding the benefits of studying A-Levels and the International Baccalaureate (IB) for the High School seniors. These two certificates are well-recognised by world’s leading universities and it is a good preparation for admission to university with either one. How to choose from A-Levels and IB becomes the next important question.

Professor Rupert Ward said: “This decision is part of a broader lifelong learner-earner journey and that the important point is that at each stage of this journey we should understand what is the best fit for us in terms of engaging with and making progress with learning.”

“A-Levels tend to suit those with very clear and specific study preferences and for STEM students may be a better choice for those who struggle either with English communication or with a breadth of study demands. IB offers breadth and may be better suited to a more all-round learning approach, and aligns for example, better with those who may then choose to study in the United States.”

Dr Phillip Williams said:“A-Levels and the IB syllabus are very different and they both have their own strengths and weaknesses. Students should certainly choose the option that they feel most confident and comfortable with. ”

“A-Levels in subjects like English, History or Economics provide you with universal and transferrable skills that serve you during your undergraduate studies and well beyond. It is very probable that in the future professionals will need to adapt to the disruptions and opportunities presented by AI. However, the higher-level analytical skills that are the basis of a professional career today will continue to be the essential tools in the next thirty or forty years. And it is these skills that you acquire, or begin to acquire, when you take A-Levels and the humanities part of the IB syllabus.”
