2021-04-1587

Time is flying, you will find that you can do more than you thought when you have no direction while try to explore your own path. It is wise of you to choose reasonably and seize the opportunities that are more valuable to your personal growth than accepting all surrounding opportunities. Besides, learning to reconcile with yourself is an important lesson in the way of growth. Being your own protector and always being your own audience. ——LIU Xinyi from Y3 Business Management

Balance work, study and life

I try to experience more challenges in my university life so that I joined Student Union and some clubs. My sophomore was a busy and fulfilling year, as I became the President of the Practice Committee and Head of the Social Practice Department of the Student Union, Head of HR of the ACTOR Club and Vice President of the SBC Psychology Association, and also participated in some social practice projects on the theme of intercultural communication and innovation and entrepreneurship.

As a multi-tasker, I spent my sophomore year travelling to various campuses for defenses, events and competitions. Although staying up all night was common, it was not possible to give up. I worked hard and efficiently, planned and took responsibility for each task at hand. The care and encouragement of my tutors and teachers, the help and support of my teammates are my strongest support on the way.

There were also many achievement in my sophomore year, with several school, city and national level awards, organizing several school-level events, as well as gaining good academic results. Throughout the year, I have grown rapidly in my ability to work and my mindset. Dealing with multi-task more comfortably, speaking more confidently in public, and also choosing and seizing opportunities that suit me more wisely are all this year brought to me.

There is as much emotion in my heart as dirt under my feet when volunteering to teach in rural areas

It has always been my dream to teach in the mountain villages, therefore I joined the Heart & Hope team. We went to Poyang in the summer of 2019, and became a kind teacher and good friend to the children there. Before I joined the team, I thought that teaching was a one-way payment of love, but I did not expect to gain the purest and the most impressive touch. Finally I gradually experienced the true meaning of Life Impacts Life, which is the aim of Heart & Hope.

There are stars in children’s eyes, their tender and lovely smiling faces, the simple and innocent love are the beauty that I will always hide in my heart. In Poyang, I have also met a group of peers who share the same pain and suffering together. Although we come from all over the world and have different temperaments, we can meet here and work hard for one thing with the same sincere heart. The constant companionship, the sharing every night, the occasional quarrel, are all for the sake of making the children better.

In 2020 summer, we could not go to Poyang in person due to COVID-19, but on the eve of July 1, we led 232 primary school students in Poyang, Jiangxi to visit the National Anthem Museum through live webcast, and carried out a series of classes on the cloud, which broke the geographical barrier and brought the major museums and the great rivers and mountains of our country into the mountainous areas. We hope this way can offer children the wings of their dreams and inspire more children to learn and make their life much more colorful with increasing opportunities.

By chance, I had the honor to represent the Heart & Hope team to give a speech entitled The pursuit of happiness, serving the motherland, Heart & Hope is on the way in Shanghai Education Television. Sharing the story of Heart & Hope with more people and passing on the spirit of Heart & Hope further and wider.

Explore the business world

Journalism is a dream for me. In addition to majoring in business, I also minored in journalism at Fudan University. The double-major broadened my horizons and helped me to regain my original ambition. In the summer of my junior year, it occurred to me that could I combine the two majors I was studying? Hence, I tried to submit my CV to a financial media outlet that I had loved and admired since high school and was quite lucky to become a trainee financial journalist.

At first, most of the interns around me were experienced graduate or undergraduate students from prestigious journalism schools, and I was very nervous as I had no relevant internship experience or professional background. Fortunately, the journalist teachers and other interns in the media were very willing to help me, and I gradually learnt to take the initiative in proposing topics, contacting interviews, writing articles and creating value for readers with my professionalism. The English language skills I developed at SBC also made me more confident when communicating with foreign interviewees.

During my internship, I had the opportunity to explore a brighter world of business. Sitting in a conference room with senior journalist teachers, I had opportunity to listen to them analyse the latest developments in the industry with professional insight and business insight. Additionally, communicating with companies, experts and other people also gave me a new and deeper understanding of the business community and greatly improved my ability to research, communicate and write.

SBC has brought me a fresh perspective on the world and has developed my ability to think critically and dialectically. It is also a place with various opportunities, which means whether or not you can seize the chance to improve yourself depends on your personal choice. I have tried out student union, societies, creative entrepreneurship, interdisciplinary learning, teaching, public service, social practice, debates, speeches and internships…All of which have made up my enriched university life and given me a clearer direction to move forward.
