On the morning of 15th September, CAI Yonglian, Vice President of USST, Dean of SBC met the first class of new students. The class was held by LI Yan, Party Secretary of SBC, Deputy Director of Campus Management Committee, Fuxing Road Campus. Student Tutors, Fanny HUANG, Aviva GAO and WANG Ting also attended.
The topic of the first class was mainly about ‘USST is growing with our country, as we overcome the challenges of this era’. “How do you think of 2020? How you imagine your university? What do you think of Shanghai?” These were three questions from Vice President CAI. The students answered the questions positively, A lot has happened in 2020. The disease was a critical moment in my senior year of high school, which is not only a difficulty but also a challenge for me. University is a completely different learning environment from primary school and middle school, which means that we will have more opportunities and space to develop. Vice President CAI said that 2020 is a special year, especially for students who are starting university life. Before starting the new semester, it is essential to know something about USST. She talked about the history and development of the university with pictures, words, stories and deeds of alumni. She stressed that USST is a key applied research university in Shanghai, which has always undertaken the national mission and its historical responsibilities. It is also a university with engineering at its core and a multi-disciplinary approach across engineering, science, economics, management, literature, law, art. In 2018, USST became a pilot for the construction of high-level local universities in Shanghai.
With themes of our university, our time and our responsibility, Vice President CAI told the students that China is going through great changes unseen in a century. As the hope of the future of the country, young people should regard learning as most important task. “University life will enable students to experience a qualitative leap in their future, and 'high standards, strict requirements, solid foundation and strong practice' is our university's tradition, all the time! Freshers said they had benefited a lot from the first class and fell very honoured to come to study on the campus which has a history of more than 100 years.
