Three SBC students beat thousands of candidates from more than 500 universities in the 10th Marthorcup Mathematical Modelling Competition. QIU Yilin, PEI Yiqing, GU Sizhe who are studying SBC’s Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree programme with Liverpool John Moores University won the third prize in this competition under the guidance of Dr. CHEN Huixin from SBC’s School of Engineering and Computing.

The competition, for university students, was organised by the Chinese Society of Optimization, Overall Planning and Economical Mathematics and attracted 4842 teams from 504 universities including Tsinghua University, Peking University between May 21st and 25th.

Dr. CHEN Huixin coached the students online. During the competition, students raced to analyse and design models during the day time, and stayed online at night. After four days, 97 hours, they finished and submitted their results. After rigorous evaluation, SBC students were awarded third prize.

Through the competition, the students deepened their understanding of mathematical modelling, team work and operations knowledge. As part of encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship, lecturers and students are encouraged to participate in competitions. This contributes to the development of our teaching and learning at SBC and fosters application to the real world and further innovation.
