We talked to some of our Mechanical Engineering in their 8th week of online study to find out their recommendations for success.
Year 1 LIU Jia
“The formula in Mechanical Engineering must be memorized, though it is very complicated. At the same time, working out more maths problems can help you understand better. And I recommend the books edited by MAO Gangyuan and Zhang Yu.
“Maintaining our English is also important for us. Listening, speaking, reading and writing are all practical. I think PTE and BuBei are very good English learning apps.
“I would recommend some books about Mechanical Engineering: like “Linear Algebra”, “Advanced Mathematics” (Tongji 7th edition), “Theoretical Mechanics” (Harbin Institute of Technology edition), “Fundamentals of Mechanical Design”, (Oxford English Graphic Course in Physics).
“As for apps and websites: App: mechanical design manual. www: Self-study Website (computer programming C, C++, solidworks); Ai Ke Chengcourse, MOOC
Year 2 ZHU Chen
“Current courses of Mechanical Engineering are divided into two categories: basic knowledge of thermal-electric fluid direction and practical operation of material design direction.
“I'm used to taking notes in class. Since there is no formula table in Year 2, the notes can be used to review before examination and help to make my thoughts clear. In terms of practical courses, I usually use some apps, like Bilibili or Self-study Website to find some valuable paid classes or free classes.
“When stay at home, it is a good way to improve learning efficiency to study online with students and use OH.”
Year 3 ZHOU Yuhang
“During Year 1 to Year 3, mechanical principles, mechanical design, machining and material process are learned. The principle of automatic control and mechatronics in mechanical automation will be studied in the third year. During these studies, I have collected some useful books and I have summarised my relevant experiences:
1. “Mechanical drawing” -This book has very detailed introduction facing all mechanical-related students, which is the basis of learning mechanics.
2. “Basis of Mechanical Designing” -This is a book that mechanics must read. It introduces the working principles, structural characteristics and design and calculation methods of common mechanical transmission and common parts; the speed regulation and balance of mechanical operation, the innovative design of machinery.
3. “Theoretical Mechanics” is the basis of dynamics. -This book is divided into two volumes. The first volume covers statics, kinematics, and dynamics; the second one covers the basics of analytical mechanics, collision, mechanical vibration, and gyroscope approximation.
4. “SolidWorks Mechanical Design-Entry to the Master 2014 Chinese version” edited by CAD/CAM/CAE technology alliance. The content includes application methods and skills, learners can quickly master the knowledge of sketch drawing, feature creation, assembly design, engineering drawing design, etc. through reading this book.
Year 4 WANG Yizhan
As a Year 4 student studying Mechanical Engineering, WANG Yizhan believes that think it will be helpful to determine the career direction and any further study in good time since this degree covers a wide range of fields.
“I recommend a very comprehensive learning website - Coursera. The courses on this website are from more than 190 top universities and companies in the world, such as Machine Learning at the University of London, Data Science at Imperial College London, and Neural Networks and Deep learning at NVIDIA. Also Vanderbilt University provides introduction to MATLAB programming, etc., and can be used to supplement knowledge outside the classroom.

“In addition, I believe that many of you are also working on the course paper. Two synonym search and word matching website are recommended. https://www.thesaurus.com
https://www.english-corpora.org/bnc/
Among them, BNC can check the synonyms and use frequency of vocabulary;also help us correct grammatical errors. Then your paper will be better!”
