2020 Visiting scholar to University of Stuttgart Research on thermal properties of machine tools with IfW at University of Stuttgart
University of Stuttgart, Germany
I'm now in Germany, doing research on thermal properties of machine tools with the Institute for Machine Tools (IfW) at the University of Stuttgart. The project is Development of a Universal Approach to Experimental Determination and Modelling of the Thermal Behavior of Machine Tools Under Process Conditions. The main body of the project is developing methods for testing, modelling and simulating thermal properties of machine tools, under different cutting and environmental conditions.
The details include:
Designing and manufacturing devices used for testing thermal properties of machine tools;
Experimental determination of thermal properties of machine tools under different environmental and thermal-load conditions;
Conducting experimental determinations on machine tools in University Stuttgart and University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) respectively;
Research on universal and effective methods of determining the thermal properties of machine tools, when internal and external heat source are acting respectively or together;
Modelling the thermal properties of machine tools;
Developing methods of designing structures of thermal properties;
Determine the compensation model to control thermal errors.
The implementation of this technology will break through the technical barrier to which the control technology of thermal deformation of precision equipment is limited, and contribute to the emendation of ISO standard.
The epidemic situation caused by Covid-19 is extremely serious in Germany, and the number of confirmed cases has reached 140,000. The German government has taken strict prevention and control measures, including prohibiting all public activities, closing all public places except supermarkets and hospitals, and requesting people comply with home quarantine. The spread and infection of Covid-19 has been controlled effectively so far, and a positive trend emerge thanks to the Embassy in Germany, my motherland provided prevention materials for Chinese including overseas students and visiting scholars. Also, China provided prevention materials for Germany to help them deal with Covid-19, showing the temperament and style of a powerful country. I am very grateful to my motherland for her considerate care.
As what had been done in China, all schools in Germany have been closed, and students are studying online, communicating with teachers by means of online meeting.
The Sino-British College, USST, Shanghai
It was a fortunate to become the Programme Leader of ME/MSE programme in the Sino-British College, USST in June, 2019. What I have found during communications with students is their outstanding ability to exchange ideas and work as a team. Besides, they always insist on exploring the essence of a phenomenon and have the spirit of making breakthroughs themselves. All of these are indispensable features of talents understanding advanced technology in the future.
The lecture series held by SBC last year displayed the international vision and innovative spirit of SBC to a great extent, and deeply explained the “engineering-oriented, innovative and international” talent-cultivating objective proposed by SBC.The lectures are capable of provoking the innovative potentials of students, and building a platform for students to put their innovative ideas into practice, immerging themselves into the world of technology.
As groups with advanced technology and thoughts in society, college and university students are prospective professionals cultivated by the country, representing the most advanced prevailing culture, and are pillars of promoting social progress. It is of great significance to apply advanced achievements of scientific research to their classes, which plays an important role in broadening their horizons and raising their awareness of innovation. For example, when teaching mechatronics and numerical control, knowledge of factors affecting precision of equipment and controlling methods are introduced into teaching contents, making students cognitive of leading technology. Such practice not only helps to broaden their horizons and stimulate the consciousness of making innovations, but also reflects the teaching attitude of USST and SBC, which aims to nurture teaching with scientific research.
Here are some advice to MSE gratuates:
Accumulate richly and break forth vastly. Your university will always back you up. Meanwhile, continue studying and enrich yourselves, then serve your motherland in the future.
