The 5thweek of online study, see what suggestions and feedback that Event Management students provide?

Year1 HUANG Xuanqi

“Events Management is a comprehensive subject that requires an abundant knowledge base.”

Events Mangement is a comprehensive subject. We study areas such as  event planning, conference services, exhibition-hall design, project management, marketing, economics, and accounting which are essential knowledge in the industry. The subject requires us to enrich our knowledge as much as possible.

I would recommend books such as < Marketing>, <Economics of Milk and Cola>,etc. These books cover such fields as economics, politics and philosophy with great reference value.

Year1 HUANG Ting

Strategic learning, three steps

1.   Point learning. What we need to do is to understand the basic meaning of knowledge points and the understanding of all concepts.

2.   Block learning. It means making a preliminary connection to the knowledge points and form a framework to summarise the after-class knowledge.

3.   Network learning. Combine the theoretical knowledge taught on the module with the application, and check the linkage with actual practice.

Year2 XIE Jianing

Independent learning with teachers’ guidance

During online study, our teachers send personal presentation materials, as well as course materials and exercise topics for study through e-mail. Online Q&A time is also provided, which is very helpful.

There are limits on what is provided, we should be independent when studying at home and continue to research the topic areas for ourselves. I recommend to participate in the #self-study challenge at home#, which is a topic initiated on Weibo. My friends and I make a list that we need to do every day, such as reading, exercising and work completion which will make us more efficient.

Year3 YANG Siqi

Participate in extracurricular practice, and use theory flexibly

When writing papers, KAAE model is very useful, that is “K (Knowledge),A (Application), A (Analysis), E (Evaluation)”.  Adding some case studies makes the point of the paper clearer after the theoretical frameworks are completed. Therefore, it is necessary to become familiar with some classic event-management examples and understand the industry trends. Here are a good website to help you learn more about event management.

Event Management is a major requiring you to also practice the skills learnt. It is suggested that you can participate in many world-class summits as a volunteer.  For instance, I joined in the 2018 HUAWEI Connect event responsible for receiving foreign delegations as well as arranging meeting venues as leader of the high-level meeting area. In 2019, I had an internship experience in iQIYI event planning, which is about B2B negotiation.

While this year, I became a member of marketing department in Marcom. A professional exhibition companies which not only let me learn more skills, but also enabled me to work from preliminary preparation to online and offline promotions. These not only improved my understanding of event management, but also provided valuable experience for my professional courses.

Year4 GAO Xin

We need good habits in both classroom and workplace

Writing papers or undertaking presentations all involve a range of literature reading. Here I recommend the online library of Huddersfield University (https://library.hud.ac.uk/), and journal articles on Google Scholar and Sci-Hub (https://sci-hub.org.cn/). In addition, it is also a good choice to widen your horizon by using online channels and learning tools such as TED talks and Bilibi.

In my third year, I worked as an intern in LiveRamp as an assistant in the marketing department. I found that international enterprises all pay great attention to English ability when interviewing. I would also recommend working on your basic technology skills, like Photoshop. Finally skills such as attention to detail will help you greatly in the event industry.
