After 4 weeks of online teaching, we asked some Business Management students how their studying was going?

Year 1 FANG Jiaqi

FANG Jiaqui has thought about how to split up his learning activities.  “Maybe you have heard about Pareto's principle: I focused on the most important 20 percent; and devoted 80 percent of my time”. According to Pareto's principle, FANG Jiaqi divided his learning into three parts and then shared his ideas to classmates in the form of mind map notes.

He told us “first of all, the core content must be memorized clearly. For example, define your number unemployed by presenting it to your family or fellow students.

“Secondly, the content should still be a memory for you, after learning, and that means we can communicate with others freely when mentioning relevant topics. Like analysis, we need to fully use our subjective thoughts on the basis of books and consider from multiple perspectives and subjects when analysing the impact of unemployment on the economy.

“The third one is application. Section B measures applied ability, which accounts for 20 percent in the business test. Then what we learned can be applied to life.”

Year 2 TAO Jianing

Although only in hissecond year in university, TAO Jianing has gained many honours. The learning methods are never all the same, exploring the most suitable one can really improve learning efficiency.  The summary of after-class notes is essential for further understanding on knowledge, which is a process of sorting and summarizing

She usually sums up her notes after class by using slides. It can not only record the knowledge that are easy to forget, but also help to quickly revise before examinations! Also, she recommended that junior students should focus more on the basic knowledge from textbook.

TAO said, “there is no doubt that essay writing is a necessary skill for business students. Even at home, communicate with your lecturer regularly and always prepare for your coursework and tests”.

Year 3 YU Qingyue

YU Qingyue notes that the library on Shuspace is useful for finding data; “Then, read the requirements and scoring criteria twice before writing the paper, and check each part after writing, so as to confirm that your direction is accurate and consistent with the scoring”.

For students planning to study overseas, she mentioned a method of English learning: focusing on one exam in one or two months before the language test (ensuring seven hours of study per day).  “When you find it difficult to concentrate at home, try to leave electronic devices, and use Forest/tomato (app) to help you to concentrate.”

“Business Management is a comprehensive degree”, she told us.  Students who are interested in a particular field or looking forward to grasp more about career directions can read some professional books or an open course website. Such as Kotler “Marketing” or Supply-chain Design and Management” and Managerial Operations Research” on a MOOC.

Year 3 MAO Sijia

Based on my experience, learning from class is especially important. The exercises and questions from class can also effectively improve listening, speaking and writing skills; then the feedback by lecturers can also give us more accurate guidance for improvement.”

She said, the teachers will recommend many practical books, and she will choose one or two and mark anything she doesn't understand in class.

She encourages students to find opportunities outside the classroom to deepen their understanding of business management. After an internship in a bank, and the accounting department, the sales department and the human resources department of different enterprises, she finally found her interest in the Marketing Department and Business Development Department in an Events company.
