The 2019 NCUK Counselling Fair was held at SBC on 27th and 28th November. Representatives from SBC’s partner universities - University of Bradford, University of Huddersfield, Leeds Beckett University, Manchester Metropolitan University, Sheffield Hallam University, University of Sheffield, University of Leeds, Liverpool John Moores University, University of Salford - and from NCUK offered advice to students. This activity was coordinated by the overseas service team in the SBC International Affairs Office.

Professor Laura Bishop, the Principal of SBC, warmly welcomed the guests, who had travelled so far. She said that the counselling mission would show SBC students a wide range of options within our partners in the British educational system. ‘SBC students are fortunate to be able to hear about the features of our partner universities first-hand, so that they can make good choices about their futures. The counselling fair helps students to be clearer about their own targets for study and career.”

About a hundred students attended the counselling mission. The Principal and Professor LIU Qin, Vice-Dean of SBC met the students and visitors. For students, entrance performance and major situation are always the most concerned problems. “There are not only requirements on academic achievement, but also language. We also care about the future course setting.” A year 2 business management student said. “Considering my future career, I am more inclined to consider a university which has a higher ranking.”

Chris Wilson, Regional Recruitment Manager of University of Sheffield said that the University of Sheffield is really welcoming to Chinese students; many SBC students have attended. “For students who want to join in University of Sheffield, especially for business students, the first task is improving the grades.” Some students from year 1 and year 2 also asked about postgraduate courses. Students believe that studying for a master’s degree requires deeper knowledge so it is necessary for them to start preparing earlier.

Alongside the fair, the representatives from Liverpool John Moores University and University of Leeds, and students who first joined summer school at University of Leeds had a sharing meeting. They introduced these universities and their summer schools to help students understand British education before departure.
