On 12th October, four student mentors from Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) arrived at SBC to spend one week meeting and working with year three and four students on our Business Management 4+0 programme. The students, Molly Hawkins, Mollie Shinwell, Lynsey Appleton and Scott Brown were selected to participate from a pool of applicants from the SHU Business School.
Before they arrived in Shanghai, they were trained in mentoring skills to help them to guide and assist BM students with their academic work and personal development.
The purpose of the week-long visit was for mentors from SHU could meet SBC students in person to introduce the mentoring scheme. During the week they visited, the mentors met all year 3 and year 4 students on the SHU programme. Each mentor has been allocated their own group of SBC students. The mentors will maintain contact with their student group and guide them through to completion of their studies. The SBC programme is part of SHU’s university-wide initiative support students at collaborative partners all over the world. As well as engaging with classes and students, our visitors also experienced the great sights and sounds of Shanghai through a series of social events organised by SBC students and the programme leader.
Programme Leader, Andy Ritchie said, ‘This is an exciting initiative and it was really interesting to see both domestic and international SBC students working face-to-face with students from one of our partner universities. This truly internationalises the student experience and we look forward to seeing the positive effects this will continue to have during the rest of the academic year, as SBC students take advantage of this extra level of support. We look forward to welcoming future mentors from SHU and even hope other partner universities will follow suit.’
Principal Prof. Laura Bishop commented, ‘we were so pleased to welcome the student peer mentors from SHU. They enjoyed their experience at SBC, and our students will gain new perspectives from interacting with the SHU students. This SHU initiative is a great example of student exchange and we hope for more opportunities to engage with our partners and their students.’
Thanks to the students and staff who made our visitors from SHU most welcome.
