On 14th June 2016, the British Consulate-General in Shanghai celebrated Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th Birthday, including hosting the ’Largest Cream Tea Party’ and setting a new Guinness World Record. A group of 20 SBC student volunteers were invited to help at the party due to their high level of English and experience in events volunteer work.
The Alice in Wonderland-themed party was held at the Ruijin Hotel in Shanghai. It began with a Garden Party featuring interactive games, performances and a theatre production performed by the pupils of the British International School.
It then moved on to the Guinness World Record attempt followed by a formal toast to HM The Queen and finished with a ‘VIP Dinner’ hosted by the Consul-General and Britain’s Deputy Ambassador to China, Martyn Roper. At the end of the evening, 735 people had successfully set a new Guinness World Record by playing a part in beating the previous record that stood at 691 people.
With over 700 people attending the event, the organisation and expertise of the volunteers were of paramount importance. Thanks to the help of SBC students, the event was a great success and all those involved behind the scenes rose to the challenge and played a part in hosting such a major event.
The organiser of the event, the British Consulate-General in Shanghai, thanked all the volunteers for their help and hard work. The Consulate-General has a long record or enrolling the help of SBC students and we are confident and determined that SBC students, particularly those studying Events Management, will get more opportunities to gain valuable experience by working at major events across Shanghai.
Professor John Wilson, Principal and CEO of SBC, was invited to join the party and take part in setting the new Guinness World Record. He said: “I’m hugely impressed by the contribution made by SBC students at such events. They are extremely professional in their role as event volunteers and have also demonstrated a high level of willingness to undertake voluntary work, which is greatly encouraged by the College given the three overarching themes set as an essential element of Vision 2025.”
