A week ago, a new cohort of 2014/15 Chinese and international students arrived at the Sino-British College, looking forward to a brand new and wonderful university life.
On the afternoon of 15th September, SBC held two Welcome Ceremonies for all new students. Hosted by Anna Yuzvik (Russia, Year 4, Events Management) and Li Hao (Year 4, Engineering), the welcome events were attended by the USST/SBC senior management team and staff from the academic and administrative teams. Some parent representatives also joined the events, sharing the hope and joy of starting a new journey.
This year, a total of about 570 high school graduates were admitted into SBC, including over 40 international students, which takes the total number of international students in SBC to nearly 120 representing over 30 countries and regions.
Our overseas students see in SBC a great opportunity to study for a UK-accredited degree, while learning Mandarin and experiencing Chinese culture in Shanghai, China’s most modern and dynamic city.
SBC has also become a popular choice for Chinese students who want to pursue quality international higher education in China. Many applicants who have achieved tier 1 in the Chinese National University Entrance Examination (GaoKao) have been attracted by The Business Management programme offered by University of Sheffield.
Professor Chen Bin, Vice President of the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology remarked in his opening speech: “SBC aims to become an established international university college in China producing quality graduates who are professionally competitive.”
Professor Ian Gow OBE, Founding Principal of SBC remarked in his opening speech that SBC will continue to improve the quality of students, staff and teaching and facilities. He believed that SBC students will be ambassadors for China or for their country and its relations with China in the exciting decade for China and its leading role in the world in the 21st century.
Following the speech given by Luo Haomin (Year 3, Business) and Bi Furong (Year 4, Engineering), on behalf of all new students, Bruno Gargerle (Germany) and Xu Wenqian shared with the audience their excitement at the opportunities offered by SBC and their raised expectations as to the university life at SBC ahead. They said: “SBC is a bridge between cultures which gives us the opportunity to develop our social skills, gain deeper cultural understanding and develop on a personal level.”
