2013-12-0365

A delegation of Colleagues and students from British International School Shanghai (BISS) paid a visit to SBC on Nov. 6, 2013. The delegation led by Nicola Scoot, Economics and Business teacher at BISS, included about 50 high school students from different countries, all of them studying at the British International School Shanghai.

SBC Principal Professor Ian Gow OBE gave a warm welcome to the delegation and delivered a lecture introducing Higher Education in the UK to help students get a general idea about life in SBC and in the partner universities. In addition, Professor Gow discussed some of SBC’s most outstanding graduates from 2012, currently pursuing postgraduate study at world famous universities like Imperial College London, University of Warwick, University of St Andrew, Duke University, and University of Pennsylvania etc.

Then academic staff of SBC prepared two demonstration classes for the delegation, providing the opportunity to experience classroom life in SBC. For the Business demo-class, Andy Ritchie, SBC Assistant Director of the School of Business and Communication who had nearly 25 years of teaching experience, not only discussed relevant business courses but also put forward actual business cases for students from delegation to discuss, elucidating the differences between lecturing and tutorials – two different teaching methods in SBC. For the Engineering demo, Dr Gareth Lewis, SBC Head of the School of Engineering, gave a brief introduction on the prospects of engineering in China and the independent learning of engineering in SBC. Dr Lewis followed this with a class on the development of control systems, showing how students learn engineering in SBC.

Besides the introductory discussions, demo classes and campus tour, students from the delegation had the opportunity to have Alice Riddington, one of their own, a graduate from British International School, Shanghai currently studying Business Management at SBC, share her learning experience at SBC. This was the second visit of British International School Shanghai to SBC. Their first visit took place in 2012.

Dr Chris Bayley, Director of International Development of SBC, expressed his appreciation for the continuing cooperation with BISS: “We are delighted to welcome BISS students to our Fuxing Road campus and let them know how they can continue to enjoy their British university education right here at the heart of Shanghai. We hope the BISS students enjoyed their visit today, and we look forward to seeing some of them again at SBC as our students in autumn, 2014.”
