The Toray International Marathon began at Chen Yi Square in Shanghai on 4th December 2011. John Ford, Shaun Caldwell, Tom King from SBC’s Centre of English for Academic Purposes and Ben Griffith, Economic teacher from the school of Business took part in the half-marathon event.
Ben encouraged his colleagues to take part in the race as a fund-raising activity organized by SBC SIFE to support 'Giving Tree', a charity that helps orphans and poor children living in Shanghai. All the keen runners rose to the challenge and were delighted to help raise money for such a worthy cause.
The SBC SIFE team offered on-site support and encouragement on the day and the four teachers all successfully completed the race with good finishing times.
Speaking after the event, Jon Ford and Tom King both agreed that completing the race was quite a challenge but it was a great opportunity to raise money for a good cause.
Keen runner Shaun Caldwell enjoyed the race and said that the fund-raising aspect kept him motivated to reach the finish line. He also said that it was a great experience to take part in an international marathon event in China.
