SBC Holds Guest Lecture on Sustainable Business Practices by Carolyn Yu of Peikko Construction Material

2026-04-1610

On 14 April 2026, as part of the Business and Climate Change module, students attended a guest lecture by Carolyn Yu, Sales Director at Peikko Construction Material – a leading supplier of slim floor structures and connection technology for concrete construction. The lecture was organised by Peter Bachmann, module leader of Business and Climate Change at SBC.

Carolyn explained how Peikko, headquartered in Finland and present in 30 countries with over 2,000 employees, is successfully competing in China through its sustainable approach in construction and smart design, and by using efficient supply chains. With its large selection of concrete connections and composite beams, the company sets itself apart by making the construction process faster, safer and more sustainable.

In the second part of the lecture, Carolyn provided her insights what it takes to land a job or an internship in today’s competitive economic environment. She recalled her own job-hunting days after graduating. While it was much easier to get a job at that time than today, some things do not change in the search of an employment: Dedication, perseverance and the commitment to get started, even if the first job is not a dream job. In the hiring process, companies look for motivated graduates that show a genuine interest to learn, adapt, and develop their own personality.

Students found the lecture highly inspiring, gaining a deeper understanding of sustainability in business and the qualities needed to succeed in their future careers.
