2016-05-2435

Following the formal approval from the Chinese Ministry of Education, Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) will offer its BA (Hons) Business Management programme at The Sino-British College (SBC) from September 2016.

Under the partnership agreement, students who join SBC in September 2016 will be given the opportunity to complete a four-year SHU degree programme entirely at SBC in Shanghai (i.e. a 4+0 pathway), or with the third year abroad studying at SHU in the UK and completing the degree back in Shanghai (2+1+1 pathway). Upon completion of the degree, the SBC students will be awarded BA (Hons) Business Management by SHU.

Since gaining the Royal Charter and full university in 1992, SHU has developed into most popular and progressive universities in the UK with over 30,000 students, including over 3,000 international students from more than 120 countries. The University holds a reputation and status as a significant and strategic partner of the local and international community, serving the needs of industry and commerce and providing direct access to international networks for teaching, research and innovation. It has developed business links with education institutions and overseas governments on capacity-building projects, research and consultancy and is one of the UK's largest providers of student placements working with international organisations including Adidas, British Petroleum, Nestle, Rolls Royce, Sony and Microsoft.

As one of the nine UK partner universities of SBC, SHU has been working closely with SBC over the past 10 years. It is one of the most popular destinations for students studying split-degree programmes (2+2 pathway) at SBC.

The newly launched BA (Hons) Business Management degree at SBC will be delivered with full support from Sheffield Business School (SBS) at SHU. SBS has been shortlisted in two consecutive years for the highly prestigious Times Higher Education Awards (THE) category "Business School of the Year" in 2014 and 2015. In 2014 the School was successful in achieving the highly-regarded EPAS ([E]uropean Foundation for Management Development Programme Accreditation System) accreditation for  two of its programmes,  making SBS one of only three institutions worldwide with EPAS accreditation for its hospitality and tourism courses, and one of only six to gain recognition for its postgraduate international business course. SBS is also a member of the American business school network, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

The BA (Hons) Business Management is designed in accordance with the UK’s Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) Subject Benchmark Statement: Business and Management. As such, it provides a curriculum that meets the needs of modern business, is academically challenging and provides a stimulating student experience. It will also help students to be prepared for development of a career in business and management while enhancing lifelong learning skills and personal development to contribute to society at large.

Students will learn about the management of organisations and the changing environment in which they operate. The traditional disciplines of marketing, human resource management, finance and accounting and strategic management are built on and considered in the context of global developments and change in an exciting and relevant way in the design of this degree. Particular attention is given to academic and professional development with an emphasis on global citizenship and socially responsible leadership.

Andy Ritchie, Assistant Director, UK Degree Programmes at SBC said: “What is really exciting about the introduction of this degree to SBC is that the teaching learning and assessment strategy is focused on student-centred learning, developing practical skills, alongside academic knowledge in a way that will inspire and challenge. Teaching will be done through projects and case studies, often live and real time, with some being carried out in collaboration with students based at the Sheffield Hallam University campus. This will give SBC based students a unique learning opportunity that incorporates a truly cross cultural and international experience reflecting the dynamics and challenges found in the global nature of business today.”

The SHU Business Management degree will commence at SBC from September 2016. This means that mainland Chinese students graduating from high schools this year are all eligible to apply through Direct Entry recruitment at SBC. The degree is also offered to new international student applicants and existing international students who are studying Years 1 and 2 Business Management and Events Management at SBC.

Professor John Wilson, Principal and CEO of SBC said: “I am absolutely delighted that we are now able offer the Sheffield Hallam University BA (Hons) Business Management programme, and to do so in a variety of ways including the 4+0 pathway. Sheffield Hallam has an excellent academic reputation and is well known for the quality of the student experience, not least that enjoyed by international students. This is all reflected in the programmes offered by its business school, Sheffield Business School, including of course the Business Management programme. To have the programme available in Shanghai is a fantastic opportunity for students, in China and around the world.”
