In order to thoroughly implement the Shanghai Municipal Government's strategy of revitalizing the city through science and education, and to cultivate the talents in short supply in advanced manufacturing and modern service industries, the key university of Shanghai-University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) under the support of the Shanghai Municipal Government have co-established the Sino-British College of the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology with world-class universities in UK including University of Sheffield, University of Leeds, University of Bradford, University of Huddersfield, Leeds Beckett University, Liverpool John Moores University, University of Salford, Sheffield Hallam University.

SBC was fully licensed by Ministry of Education (MoEof the People's Republic of China in September 2006. It is the first Chinese-foreign cooperation to adopt one to N Consortium Model, as a secondary college affiliated with USST, and fully implemented bachelor's degree education and international bachelor's degree education. SBC became an advanced signatory to PRME in 2019. In 2021, SBC officially became the member of the Association to Advance collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). In 2022, SBC was officially accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) for two programmes in the School of Engineering and Computing: Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, which marked a significant milestone in SBC's history. It has led to great progress in development and is a crucial symbol of the college to become a leading international college. In 2023, SBC awarded the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL) Validated Programme for EAP programmes, This demonstrates our programme and the School are of high quality and meet internationally recognised standards in language teaching. The English for Academic Purposes grades obtained by students at the Sino-British College are recognized by more than 50 universities around the world. In 2023, SBC officially became the member of European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) .

SBC is based in Fuxing Road campus of USST, which is in central Shanghai. The campus not only has century-old history but also is of international atmosphere. Degree programmes are taught entirely in English across the whole spectrum of School of Business and Management, School of Engineering and Computing, School of Languages, Education and Cultures by a highly qualified academic team comprising 120 lecturers with international teaching backgrounds from 20 different countries and regions, International lecturers account for 70% of the academic team. SBC is one of the few joint institutes with Free-entry enrolment qualification. Currently, SBC has 1,900 full-time undergraduate students. 

With campus in SBC and our programmes available to study the UK partner universities. SBC offers full degree programmes taught entirely in English, and also offers pathway programmes (4+0, 2+2, 2+1+1) for students to the UK partner universities. A partnership between USST and the UK partner universities in the Sino-British College provides the opportunity for Dual-Registered students to study in China and receive a dual degree from USST and the UK partner university. Free-entry students obtaining a Bachelor’s degree from the UK partner universitiy.

SBC graduates have been recognised as having achieved great success both in terms of outstanding academic performance, social responsibility etc. SBC seeks to create and sustain an environment for all students, staff and stakeholders that is characterised by our commitment to three overarching themes representing attributes that SBC values and seeks to develop in all students and staff: responsible leadership; enterprise and innovation; cultural empathy. Since 2006 the academic and administrative operations of SBC-USST has been underpinned by a strategy of internationalization. SBC-USST’s academic programs are taught by Western trained academics who are culturally sensitive to Chinese student’s needs – all while adopting an international perspective to promote reform in higher education and pedagogy. SBC-USST’s strategy of internationalization strengthens high-level international cooperation, educational exchange and internal stakeholder development (i.e. student, staff, faculty and alumni) – that contribute to the national development strategy of Shanghai’s municipality to create ‘Five Centres’, in terms of regional innovation and development. SBC-USST proudly promotes the mission of cultivating students to become international ambassadors of China domestically as well as in both foreign countries and multinational corporations (MNCs). SBC-USST is committed to preparing the next generation of talent to engage in global development initiatives and in mutual exchanges (education, culturally, etc.) between the east and west.
