Our English for Academic Purposes course is provided to our free entry students’ in their first year of study. Students study for eight hours a week in small classes and develop the English language skills that are required to engage with university study successfully in an English speaking environment.

The classes focus on aspects of language such as grammar, vocabulary or pronunciation in an academic context, and the specific language uses needed for university study. These include academic writing, reading and research, listening and note-taking, and seminar and discussion skills.

Our dual award students study academic English in a variety of language courses in their first year depending on their area of study. Students on our dual award in engineering with Liverpool John Moores University study on our English Language Studies course while students on our dual award in business management with Sheffield Hallam University study on our English for University and English for Business Management courses. Students on our dual award in events management with the University of Huddersfield study on our Academic English Studies course. Each of these courses focus on academic English specific to the students’ main field of study and are delivered in small classes of approximately 16 students with a strong focus communicative teaching.

Students studying in their second and third years of our dual award in Events Management also study Professional English as a Foreign Language. This involves both the study of English use in the events industry and language support for their main areas of study. The module provides students with the opportunity to further improve their fluency and accuracy in English.
