WELCOME TO SBC-USST
The University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) is a key multidisciplinary applied research-oriented university in China. It comprises 18 colleges, schools and departments, with a full-time student population of more than 30,000: over 18,000 undergraduates and 12,000 postgraduate students.
USST has two campuses, the Jungong Road Campus and the Fuxing Road Campus. It has established two Sino-foreign joint educational institutions: the Sino-British College (SBC) and the Sino-German College.
Established in 1906, USST is a high-level institution of higher education in Shanghai.

The Jungong Road Campus of USST
SBC is located in USST’s Fuxing Road Campus, one of the most attractive areas in downtown Shanghai. SBC was fully licensed as a joint venture institute by the Ministry of Education (MoE) of the People's Republic of China in 2006. It was co-established by USST, nine British universities. Its current partnership includes University of Sheffield, University of Leeds, University of Bradford, University of Huddersfield, Leeds Beckett University, Liverpool John Moores University, and University of Salford.
SBC currently offers domestic and international bachelor's degree education in Business Management, Events Management, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. It has 120 faculty and staff members from over 20 different countries and regions, and nearly 1,800 full-time undergraduate students.
SBC has been an Advanced Signatory Member of PRME since 2019. In 2021, it became a member of AACSB. In 2022, its engineering programmes received IET Accreditation. In 2023, SBC became a member of EFMD. Meanwhile, SBC English for Academic Purposes (EAP) module was awarded CIOL Validated Programme status in 2023.This status was renewed for 2 consecutive years.

CAMPUS LIFE
Located in the heart of downtown Shanghai, SBC offers a tranquil and beautiful campus where historical heritage blends with modern vitality. It is surrounded by bustling commercial districts and is close to city landmarks such as the Bund and Xintiandi, providing convenient living and rich cultural resources.
Transportation is excellent. The campus is within a 5-minute walk to three metro lines; Hongqiao Airport and Pudong International Airport are both within one hour's drive. It is one of Shanghai's best-located university campuses, an international campus in the urban center, offering a superior environment for study, life, and exchange.

A RICH HISTORICAL AND CULTUAL HERITAGE
The campus is home to seven century-old buildings, forming the largest cluster of historical architecture of any university in downtown Shanghai, harmoniously integrated with the Hengfu Historical and Cultural Districts. The library, built in 1914, is a designated Shanghai Excellent Historical Building.
The campus embodies profound Shanghai-style cultural heritage, showcasing a unique blend of history and modernity.

Shanghai, a municipality directly under the central government of China, is a modern international metropolis known for its inclusiveness, pursuit of excellence, broad-mindedness, and humility.
Located at the estuary of the Yangtze River in East China and facing the Pacific Ocean, Shanghai forms part of the Yangtze River Delta, one of China's most dynamic, open and innovative regions.
By the end of 2024, Shanghai covered an administrative area of 6,340.5 square kilometers, comprised 16 districts, had a permanent population of 24.8026 million, and recorded a per capita GDP of 217,100 yuan ($30,490).
As China's largest economic powerhouse and an important international financial center, Shanghai achieved a GDP of 5.39 trillion yuan in 2024, a year-on-year increase of 5 percent.

Shanghai is also a leading international trade and consumption center, with the world's highest port throughput. It is an important global shipping hub and an open economic center. The city is also making significant progress in building an international science and technology innovation center and is developing into an internationally influential digital city, strengthening the foundational for urban digital transformation.

Shanghai is a world-renowned cultural metropolis and international travel destination, with 238 public libraries, 171 museums and 99 art galleries at the end of 2025. The city's transport system is highly efficient, with a metro network reaching 906 kilometers.
Shanghai has a subtropical maritime monsoon climate, characterized by high humidity and ample rainfall. It experiences hot and muggy summers, cool falls, cold winters with little snow, and warm springs. From June through October, the city enjoys the sunniest days of the year, with summer temperatures often exceeding 90°F (32°C) and high humidity levels.
Shanghai is known as The Pearl of Asia and The Paris of the East.

TRAVEL AND SOCIAL EVENTS
The programme includes excursions that allow you to explore Shanghai. Shanghai is one of China's largest cities, featuring some of the best modern architecture alongside traditional sites like Yu Garden and Jing'an Temple. You can spend your morning strolling along Huaihai Road or Nanjing Road, your afternoon enjoying stunning city views from the Oriental Pearl Tower Observation Deck, and your night cruising on the dazzling Huangpu River. History and art lovers can admire the collections at one of Shanghai’s many museums.
Evening and weekend social programmes are organized by SBC Student Ambassadors, who have extensive local knowledge and are there to help you make the most of your time in Shanghai and at SBC.
Previous social activities have included a welcome reception, visits to landmarks such as the Bund, Shanghai Tower, Jin Mao Tower, and the Shanghai World Financial Center, workshops on Chinese culture and tradition, and trips to Shanghai Disneyland or water towns.
TUITIONS & FEES
Tuition for the summer school is free. Free accommodation in the college dormitory is also provided. Students are responsible for transportation, overseas travel insurance, medical insurance, meals, and other expenses (e.g., tickets for tourist sites, souvenirs, etc.).
Applicants must be second - or third year undergraduate or post-graduate students reading for Engineering or Business degrees at a partner university.
As a joint venture institution for 20 years, SBC is an International University College in Shanghai.
