The Sino-British College of USST (SBC-USST) launched the Mandarin and culture workshops for its international students, to further facilitate their integration into campus life in China and help them adapt to their new environment, while deepening their understanding of traditional Chinese culture. Through a series of carefully designed cultural experiences and Chinese language learning sessions, the workshops provide international students with a platform to gain deeper insights into Chinese language, culture, and customs, promoting meaningful cultural exchange and mutual learning between China and other countries.

Under the theme 'Language Without Borders: Having Fun with Chinese and Global Cultures Together!', student representatives from the International Project Department of SBC’s student union served as instructors, guiding international students through Chinese tone pronunciation techniques, everyday phrases and their usage, as well as introducing traditional cuisines from across China. The international students actively participated, progressing from tone mimicry to confidently pronouncing basic Chinese words like '你好' (hello) and '谢谢' (thank you). To reinforce practical language skills, the instructors organised a fun role-play activity where students filmed short skits simulating restaurant scenarios. Additionally, each participant chose a Chinese name for themselves, leaving the session with a sense of accomplishment.

The Workshop of Chinese and Global Cultures

The 'Hello, Shanghai!' themed workshop immersed our international students in the vibrant culture of the city through interactive language activities. The session included watching short videos of Shanghai's culture, learning basic Shanghai dialect, and experiencing traditional Chinese children's games. These activities not only improved their pronunciation but also deepened their appreciation for Shanghai’s history and local customs.

The Workshop of Shanghai's Culture and Dialect

These engaging Chinese workshops serve not only as a bridge fostering friendships between Chinese and international students at SBC but also as a valuable platform for cross-cultural exchange. Moving forward, SBC will continue to uphold the overarching theme of 'Cultural Empathy', creating more high-quality intercultural projects and activities and further exploring innovative ways to promote traditional Chinese culture in an international educational model.
