To further build a platform for open cooperation, cultural exchange, and interaction between Chinese and foreign faculty and students, SBC has launched a series of cross-cultural educational activities rooted in the Sino-foreign cooperative education model. Since mid-November, three exciting “Hello World” cross-cultural sharing salon events have been held, attracting more than 200 students and faculty members from both China and abroad. These events invited academic staff from around the world to share rich and diverse content about the history, culture, landscapes, art, cuisine, and customs of different countries.
Gordana Stanojevic, an EAP lecturer from Serbia, presented the topic “Serbia: Outstanding Cuisine and Entertainment Hub.” Using her hometown’s distinctive cuisine as an entry point, she introduced Serbian traditional festivals and customs in a clear and accessible way. From local music styles to a lively dance session where all the students joined in to the rhythm of a Gypsy band, Gordana led participants to experience the unique cultural charm of her distant homeland. Additionally, she skillfully compared the differences and similarities in food culture and folk customs between China and Serbia, allowing students to gain a more intuitive understanding of the distinctive appeal of different cultures.
Christian Goettker, a lecturer in Business Management from Germany, explored the theme “Beyond the Stereotypes: Discovering Modern Germany - Innovation, Celebration, and Green Visions.” He guided the audience into a vibrant and creative modern Germany. Through showcasing Germany’s magnificent natural landscapes, the unique charm of the German language, and the country’s colorful carnivals and music festivals, he gradually changed students’ traditional views of Germans as “serious” and “stiff.” Christian’s humorous and engaging presentation filled the event with laughter. He also invited students to experience German traditions firsthand, such as cutting ties and throwing candies into the audience, offering participants a unique auditory and visual experience that redefined the diverse, open, and dynamic nature of modern Germany.
Ajaya Shakya, a lecturer in Events Management from Nepal, presented the topic “Nepal: A Tapestry of Culture, Nature, and Heritage.” He introduced students to Nepal’s stunning natural beauty and unique cultural traits. Ajaya elaborated on Nepal’s geography, ethnic composition, traditional festivals, and majestic landscapes, while also sharing the country’s rich and diverse culinary culture. The audience was transported to the mysterious and extraordinary country of Nepal. When discussing Nepal’s unique ethnic music, Ajaya invited all attendees to stand and dance to the beautiful melody, raising the atmosphere to a peak of excitement.
The “Hello World” cross-cultural sharing salon series not only broadened students’ global perspectives but also deepened their understanding of and appreciation for diverse global cultures. It enabled students to explore the world through the lens of different regional cultures. In the future, the college will continue to integrate cross-cultural learning into ideological and political education, laying a solid foundation for cultivating international talents with cross-cultural communication skills and global competence.
