Support for International Students

SBC provides support to students throughout their studies and makes sure that they are able to reap the maximum possible benefits from their time studying at SBC. Each student is assigned a student services counsellor and an academic tutor. These 2 individuals will be there whenever the student needs help during their studies at SBC, whether with actual school work, making academic choices, or simply coping with daily life at university.

International Students receive special support services provided by the Student Management Department to help them to adjust to study and life in China.

Induction Programme

The Student Management Department at SBC organises an Induction Programme of events for all new international students to provide you with information and assistance with adjusting to life in Shanghai and at SBC.

International Students will be offered optional “Survival Chinese and Culture” Classes. These classes will focus on speaking and listening, and will help students to adapt to living in China. These classes are offered Free of Charge to students registered on full-time undergraduate courses at SBC. Students who meet the attendance requirement of the course will receive an ‘Attendance Certificate’ from SBC based on a satisfactory attendance and passing the course requirements.

Learning Resources Centre

At the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) students will be able to find materials required for research and subject studies, and can also use the reading rooms, group and quiet study areas, Internet, Computer and Telecommunications (ICT) facilities and photocopy machines. Students can also receive advice on how to use ICT resources.

IT Support

Each student is given an SBC email account. To check your email, please login at http://mail.sbc.usst.edu.cn/. You are advised to check your emails on a daily basis as communication from the college will only be sent to this address. If you have any problem or question in using the SBC email system, please call SBC IT Helpline at 64741269 (9:00am – 5:00pm, Monday to Friday), or email it-helpline@sbc.usst.edu.cn.

Healthcare Issues

All international students who will stay in China for more than 6 months must be medically insured throughout their entire planned period of study. Students may purchase their medical insurance before or after their arrival in China. Please click here for more details.

Mental Health Care

SBC offers a safe and confidential Chinese (Mandarin) psychological counselling service for all students. Student Management Department also helps international students make an appointment for English language psychological counselling off campus. If you need any help in this area, please contact your Personal Tutor.

Housing and Dining

Students are normally expected to live on campus. Permission may be granted to live off-campus in exceptional cases.

International House provides accommodation for students from overseas in a safe, clean and comfortable environment. It is conveniently located just inside the main college gate on Fuxing Zhong Road and is only a minute’s walk away from the SBC Library. These recently renovated apartments have been installed with essential furniture and equipment. Each room has its own separate washbasin, shower and lavatory. Internet connection is available. All rooms are air-conditioned and have hot water 24 hours a day.

All students are welcome to dine at the Dining Room located beside the athletics track at the south end of the campus. The Dining Room is conveniently only 3 minutes walking distance from the International House. Meals are simple, Chinese style, and very affordable, and you will see students and staff from all over the world eat together here.

Off-Campus dining is extremely convenient and full of variety that will cater to all tastes and budgets. Shanghai, being one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Asia, provides international cuisine that rivals any major city in the world. But if you are content to opt for the local noodle stand you can be well-satisfied for just a few RMB.
