WELCOME TO SBC-USST

The University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) is a key multidisciplinary applied research-oriented university in China. It consists of 18 colleges, schools and departments with more than 27,000 full-time students, of whom over 16,000 are undergraduate students and 11,000 are graduate students.

USST has two campuses, the Jungong Road Campus and the Fuxing Road Campus. USST has established two Sino-foreign joint educational institutions, namely, the Sino-British College (SBC) and the Sino-German College.

Established in 1906, USST is a high-level institution of higher education in Shanghai.

SBC is located in Fuxing Road Campus, which is one of the most fascinating areas in downtown Shanghai. SBC was fully licensed as a joint venture institute by the Ministry of Education (MoE) of the People's Republic of China in 2006. It was co-established by USST and British universities, namely University of Sheffield, University of Leeds, University of Bradford, University of Huddersfield, Leeds Beckett University, Liverpool John Moores University, University of Salford and Sheffield Hallam University.

SBC provides domestic and international bachelor's degree education in Business Management, Events Management, Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. It has 120 faculty & staff members from over 20 different countries and regions, and 1,900 full-time undergraduate students.

SBC has been officially promoted as the Advanced Signatory of PRME since 2019. In 2021, SBC became a member of AACSB. In 2022, SBC was fully awarded by IET Accreditation for all the engineering programmes. In 2023, SBC English for Academic Purposes (EAP) was awarded the CIOL. Meanwhile, the college became a member of EFMD in 2023.

CAMPUS LIFE

As a major historical site protected at the national level, SBC campus lies on one of the most prestigious blocks in Shanghai which represents the intersections of ancient and modern, as well as western and eastern styles of cultures. With sycamore trees giving shades from the sunlight, the streets here are home to both historical architectures that bears over hundreds of years of histories and one of the busiest areas in this metropolis with skyscrapers, city malls, restaurants and all.

SBC’s campus was where the German Medical and Engineering School was once located, and has 7 Prussian-style buildings with a century of history, of which the Engineering Hall (now the Library of SBC) is honoured as “the symbol of Prussian-style architecture in China”. Through researching and inheriting the history of this campus, we have bestowed these historical architecture with new functions and connotations, aiming at “meandering through the campus, making architecture readable, and creating a tangible culture”.

SBC’s campus is an oasis of calm in the busy Centre of Shanghai, with a mixture of historic and modern architecture, first class facilities for teaching including seminar rooms, lecture theatres, laboratories and centre for creative leadership. All students are provided with on-campus accommodation, convenient public transport, shopping, restaurants and cultural activities. USST’s main campus on Jungong Road is easily accessible by public transportation.

CITY LIFE

Shanghai is also a world-renowned cultural metropolis and international travel destination, with 239 public libraries, 162 museums and 100 art galleries by the end of 2023. The city's transport system is becoming more efficient, with its metro network reaching 831 kilometers.

Shanghai has a subtropical maritime monsoon climate, meaning high humidity and lots of rain. Hot muggy summers, cool falls, cold winters with little snow, and warm springs are the norm. Midsummer through early fall is the best time to visit Shanghai. From June through October, the city experiences the sunniest days of the year. Summers have temperatures in the 90s°F (32°C+) and high humidity levels.

TRAVEL AND SOCIAL EVENTS

The excursions included in the programme give you the opportunity to travel and explore Shanghai. Shanghai is one of the largest cities in China and hosts some of the best examples of modern architecture. It is also traditional with Yu Garden and Jing'an Temple as examples. It's anything you want it to be. You can spend your morning strolling Huaihai Road and Nanjing Road, your afternoon catching stunning city views from the top of the Observation Deck on the Oriental Pearl Tower, and the night cruising on the dazzling Huangpu River. Or, if you're a museum-goer or an art lover, you can admire the various collections and striking works on display at Shanghai Museum.

The evening and weekend social programme is organised by SBC Students Ambassadors. They have the best local knowledge and are there to help you make the most of your time in Shanghai and at SBC.

Previous social activities include a welcome reception on arrival, visits to nearby places of interest such as Shanghai Tower and Jin Mao Tower, Shanghai World Financial Center (SWFC), Workshop on Chinese culture and tradition, and Shanghai Disneyland.

TUITIONS & FEES

Tuition is free for the summer school. Free accommodation in the college is also provided. Students should pay for transportation, overseas travel insurance, medical insurance, meals and other expenses (i.e. tickets for tourist sites, souvenirs, etc.)
