SBC Student Wins Interpretation Competition

On 25th March, the second Shanghai English Interpretation Competition for middle school, high school and university students ended in the Shanghai Experimental School. Wang Tianhe, year 3 student of Manufacturing Systems Engineering from SBC, won in the group of university students and also was awarded the Best Interpreter by ShanghaiEye.

The main purpose of the Competition is to spread socialist core values and the Chinese outstanding traditional culture in order to enhance students' cultural awareness and learning abilities, to cultivate students’ national feelings by “telling the real Chinese story”, establish cultural self-confidence and enhance their core qualities.

Starting from last September, nearly 50,000 middle school, high school and university students participated in this competition, from over 100 middle schools, high schools, and universities in 16 districts in Shanghai. After 5 rounds of competition, 25 students, as individuals and as members of teams, attended the final knock-out stage.

This is the second year SBC students have participated. Throughout the Competition, Wang Tianhe not only showed everyone his outstanding English skills but also showed us the spirit of SBC students. He was fully aware of the importance of promoting Chinese culture and will continue his efforts to raise awareness of Chinese culture to the world when he goes abroad to study.

At the awards ceremony, Wang Tinhe was invited to give a speech on behalf of all the contestants. He said that he was very grateful to SBC for the College’s support.

The Competition was academically supported by a group of foreign language experts in Shanghai. "The purpose to learn foreign language is to be a better Chinese, and to tell the story of our own, especially the outstanding Chinese traditional culture and the socialist core values." said Professor Mei Deming, Member of the Working Committee of the Basic Education Curriculum Materials of the Ministry of Education, Expert Committee on Proposition and Evaluation of Shanghai Education Examination, Shanghai Foreign Language University doctoral tutor.

Professor Linda Liu, Vice-Dean of SBC, said: "It is a pleasure to see our student has achieved such a good result in the municipal competition. This is not only due to our high level of international education, but also showed that we have achieved a good result in morality education.”
