On 17th March, a group of 60 Year 3 students studying Industrial Electronics and Manufacturing Systems Engineering at SBC made a factory and laboratory visit to the Continental Automotive in Shanghai. The trip gave students a unique glimpse into the innovation and technologies used in real-world engineering projects, and also allowed them to establish important professional links to serve their future internships and employment.

The students were hosted by Ms. Jojo Wang,of Human Resources, for a tour of the Production Plant, where they saw many state-of-the-art industrial robots, as well as highly skilled workers, making high-tech components such as anti-lock brake systems and self-driving cars.  The students also visited the Research and Development Centre, where Ms. Kelly Qin showed them the interesting world of laboratories dedicated to the future of electronic and mechanical systems designed to make driving safer, more environmentally-friendly and more convenient for passengers.

The students were accompanied by Dr. James Abbott, Dr. Gareth Lewis, Dr. Peter Claiden and Dr. Joanna Sessford from SBC, who helped them gain the greatest learning from the experience.

Dr. James Abbott, Head of the School of Engineering and Computing,  said: “Such field trips are one of the cornerstones of SBC’s unique approach to teaching and learning, giving students both the skills and applications in engineering.  Continental is an amazing place to have such a unique learning experience, and we are so lucky that they have a clear and long-term commitment to support higher education.”
