The 2017 UK university counselling mission was held in the SBC Teaching Building on 13-15 March. During the three-day event, more than 260 Year 2 students, who are currently studying 2+2 split-degree programmes in Business and Engineering at SBC, received professional counselling service for overseas study offered by over 20 academics and international officers flying in from the nine UK partner universities and NCUK.

The university entrance counselling mission has become an important annual event for students and staff at SBC. Organised by NCUK, the event aims to provide guidance and advice for SBC students in choosing universities and courses for their future study in the UK. It also helps enhance mutual understanding and communication between SBC and the British partner universities. Given the great number of options available in terms of universities and courses, the counselling service provided by the partner universities is seen as crucial in ensuring a smooth transition for students who choose to complete their degree in the UK following two years’ of study at SBC.

SBC students are encouraged to become independent learners, who are able to take the initiative in thinking and to plan for their personal development. The same principle also applies when they sign up for the counselling service. With guidance offered by the SBC Overseas Service team, students were advised, as preparation for the interview, to consider questions in advance and make quality enquiries in relation to courses and subjects, student life and career opportunities after graduation.

In the debriefing session, the university representatives reported that SBC students were very well-prepared for studying in the UK, not only in terms of their English language proficiency, but also academically and culturally. They are impressed by the confidence and communicative skills that the students have demonstrated at the counselling process.

Iris Yuan, Director of International Affairs Office at SBC said: “We are pleased about the fact that our students have shown great enthusiasm for enhancing their international experience by studying for a UK degree programme. I have no doubt that given the skillset they have acquired at SBC, our students will do a very good job when they continue their study in the UK.”
