The Sino-British College (SBC) Graduate Employment Report 2016 was released recently.
According to the statistics from the SBC Career Services and Development Centre (CSD), by 1 December 2016, 98% of graduates this year have already been employed or in postgraduate programmes at excellent universities worldwide. Amongst the 200 graduates who have studied 4+0 and 2+1+1 pathways at SBC (excluding international students and students from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan), 54.5% of them chose to be employed after graduation (a year-on-year rise of 7.5%) while 43.5% went on for postgraduate study (a year-on-year decrease of 7.5%).
Of the 109 graduates who have been in work, 45.9% are employed by private-owned enterprises, 38.5% by foreign investment/joint venture companies and 15.6% by state-owned enterprises/government institutions. In terms of distribution of industries, 44% have joined advertisement, events, consulting and service industries and 26.6% graduates have joined the manufacturing industry.
For starting salary, a survey from Shanghai Municipal Human Resources and Social Security Bureau and Shanghai Municipality Students Affairs Centre shows that the average monthly salary for 2016 graduates with bachelor’s degrees in Shanghai is RMB 4,410. However, for SBC graduates this year, the average starting salary has been RMB 4,746, much higher than that of the city.
Of the 87 graduates who chose to pursue postgraduate study in world-class universities, 75.9% went to top universities in the UK and 8% in Australia. According to the 2015-2016 QS World University Ranking, 52 graduates were offered places for postgraduate study by the world’s top 100 universities, including 6 who were accepted by the world’s top 30 universities. Universities that the SBC graduates went to included University College London (UCL), Imperial College London, Nanyang Technological University Singapore (NTU), University of California, Berkeley, The University of Edinburgh, The University of Manchester, The University of Warwick, The University of Sydney and The University of Queensland.

Under the three overarching themes of SBC, i.e., responsible leadership, enterprise and innovation and cultural empathy, the SBC Careers Services & Development Centre (CSD) is committed to facilitating career success for students and alumni by enhancing their employability, careers skills and multi-cultural awareness according to the market demand.
SBC has developed a well-established career service system with three core elements embedded in the student experience at SBC, namely career development learning & training, industry link and alumni networks. The spirit of life-long learning is encouraged to help students excel in their desired professions.
An employability strategy has been developed with the specific purpose of providing SBC students with a competitive advantage in the graduate employment market – to become the employee of choice. To date, CSD has established partnerships with more than 200 leading employers and professional consultancy institutions that offer a range of career opportunities including student placements, internships, part-time work and volunteer activities. The CSD team also works with corporate partners to offer various development opportunities for students, such as corporate scholarship, Fesco-Adecco Way to Work and CEO for One Month.
In addition, the SBC International Alumni Association (SBCIAA) was established with the graduation of SBC's first cohort of graduates in 2011. SBCIAA aims to serve as a lifelong connection between alumni and SBC. It is committed to graduates’ career advancement through a platform where graduates can expand alumni networks, share career experience, update their knowledge base and seek potential business opportunities.
