On 22nd March 2016, a seminar on postgraduate education at SBC and research cooperation was held on the south campus of the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST).

The seminar was attended by members of the senior academic team at USST, including Professor Liu Baolin, Dean and Professor Jin Jing, Vice-Dean of Graduate School, Professor Qian Wei, Vice-Dean of the School of Mechanical Engineering, Professor Cheng Yunzhang, Vice-Dean of the School of Medical Instrument and Food Engineering, Professor Ye Chunming, Vice-Dean of the Business School and other representatives from the School of Optical-Electrical and Computer Engineering, School of Materials Science and Engineering and the Office of Academic Degrees. Chaired by Professor Liu Qin, Vice-Dean of SBC, the seminar was also attended by Professor John Wilson, Principal of SBC and Dr Vernon Sommerfeldt, Dr James Abbott and Gordon Callan, Heads of School-Designate.

Based on the principles and objectives outlined in Vision 2025, the seminar was organised for exploring opportunities and exchanging ideas about the initiatives of offering postgraduate degree programmes at SBC. Possibilities for undertaking joint research programmes were also discussed for the purpose of promoting collaboration amongst academics at SBC, USST and the UK partner universities. Prior to the seminar, led by Professor Wilson, discussions about development of postgraduate portfolio at SBC have been undertaken involving a number of senior academics at the partner universities in the UK.  Therefore, the seminar on Tuesday has helped to make sure that the range of subjects to be offered at the postgraduate level meets the demand of the local economy and the strategies for international development at USST and in Shanghai.

Colleagues attending the seminar had an open and in-depth discussion on the further development of SBC, covering degree portfolio, academic syllabus, quality assurance, teaching methods and resource allocation etc. Research collaboration and development is an important part of introducing postgraduate education into SBC. It was discussed that the SBC team would work even more closely with academic departments and schools at USST in terms of both teaching and research for achieving goals for internationalisation.

Professor Liu Qin, Vice-Dean of SBC and Dean of the College of Foreign Languages at USST said: “It is hoped that the SBC team can share their successful experiences in international education with USST. We also believe that with the strong support from USST, SBC will achieve greater success in the future.”
