Following the professional fire safety training last Friday, a campus-wide fire drill was organised by the SBC Health, Safety and Security (HSS) Committee on Wednesday 2nd December. The fire drill was conducted by Wuxing Group, Xuhui Branch of Shanghai Fire Station with support from the USST Department of Campus Security. All staff and students at SBC joined the fire drill practice as required.

The fire alarm was raised at 2 pm on Wednesday covering all main areas of the SBC campus, including Teaching Building, Admin Building, Learning Resources Centre, student dormitories and canteen. All staff and students were then asked to escape in good order, following the instruction of volunteers in each building. Each volunteer was equipped with a walkie talkie which was set at the same frequency for on-site communication. Staff and students were directed to the designated evacuation sites on the sportsground and the open space in front of LRC

In particular, an evacuation simulation was conducted in the Teaching Building. The simulation design was that a classroom on the 2nd floor of Teaching Building caught fire due to electrical wiring short circuit caused by wires ageing and two students were trapped. Two firefighters from Wuxing Group, Xuhui Branch of Shanghai Fire Station successfully rescued the students by using a fire escape ladder and a stretcher while the fire engine pumped water into the classroom. The remaining staff and students left classrooms under the guidance of volunteers with their back arched holding a small towel to cover the mouth and nose. Finally, the chief of drill announced the all-clear notice.

The fire drill and the fire safety training were designed to raise awareness of fire safety on campus amongst all staff and students. Thanks to the joint efforts made by the SBC HSS Committee and the USST Department of Security, staff and students and the management team at SBC were offered the opportunity to learn through practice about introductory knowledge of fire control, fire prevention and fire escape thus enhance the level of campus security as a whole.

At the end of the fire drill, a banner was presented to the team from Wuxing Group, Xuhui Branch of Shanghai Fire Station to thank them for their professional support.

Liu Bin, Secretary of Joint General Party Branch and Deputy Director of Campus Management Committee, Fuxing Campus of USST said: “As an international university college, SBC is committed to creating a safe and healthy campus environment to all students and staff. Such fire drill and training sessions will be held on a regular basis in the future to enhance further campus safety and security.”
