Year 3 Events Management students have had a busy and fulfilling time over the past two weeks from the 7th to 17th April. 14 different live events were successfully held on the SBC campus, which were well received by students, staff and invited guests.
The major achievement of this event was the great amount of money raised for two charity groups – Community Roots China and HeArts – through all the events. Community Roots China is an organization on a mission to ensure that every child in china has access to education, healthcare, and shelter. HeArts is a Chinese local NGO dedicated to helping the people with special needs through arts.
The Live Event Festival is the annual major campus-event in SBC for many years. This year saw a great increase in the variety of themed charity events which brought lots of fun and excitement to students’ campus life. In addition to delicious food and a fabulous fashion show, this year’s festival brought more sporting contests like SBC Colour Run, Bingo Run and Walk of Life.. Year 3 students worked hard and collaborated well together when facing the challenge of unpleasant weather conditions, the heavy rain and high winds of the first week of the festival.
What is special about the Events Management programme at SBC in particular is that the students learn a number of transferrable skills that they can take to any industry. Those skills include flexibility, working in teams, organisational skills, the ability to speak different languages, and the ability to be independent learners.
Kristy Reed, Lecturer of Events Management and SBC Arts & Culture Societies Advisor, who was responsible for the whole festival, had this to say: “We had a record number and wide array of vendors come to SBC and our first ever mechanical bull and media drone! More than 15,000 RMB was raised this year for 2 charities, heArts – connecting people with special needs to their communities through art, and Community Roots China – through the one-heart gift bags of school supplies and clothing for children in rural China.”
She added: “These entertaining charity events are more than just good fun. They are primarily an academic assessment of a core module that depends very heavily on the support of the SBC administration and facilities departments as well as the whole student body to be successful. So the success of these students is a success for us all!”
