On the morning of March 12, national tree-planting in China, a group of SBC student volunteers held a charity event to raise money for a project named “Planting a Million Trees” by selling various bonsai and potted plants.

The project was initiated in 2007 by Shanghai Roots & Shoots, a local charity group in Shanghai, for the purpose of planting a million trees in Inner Mongolia to combat desertification. Over 800 volunteer groups from universities and enterprises have since joined the project. Our SBC student volunteer group is one of them. Having benefited from the project, about 918 hectares of land of Inner Mongolia, which was previously desert, has been covered by tress and vegetation.

Not only did many of our students buy plants to support the fundraising, but several foreign teachers also showed their support for the charity. This shows that indicates environmental protection is without borders. All the money raised in this event will be given to Shanghai Roots & Shoots.
