This is great news that Professor Ian Gow OBE, Principal of SBC has won a top award – the “Magnolia Award” given by the Shanghai Municipality for his outstanding contribution to the internationalisation of higher education in Shanghai.
On 4th September, the presentation ceremony for the 2014 “Magnolia Award” was held in Jing’an Shangri-La Hotel, with 40 award winners and senior officials from the Shanghai government in presence. The award was presented by Li Mingjun, Director-General of the Shanghai Municipal Foreign Affairs Office.
Professor Ian Gow OBE, Principal and CEO of the Sin0-British College attended the ceremony as award winner together with his family, Professor Tian Weifeng, Vice President of the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) and Professor Ma Xiaoting, Director of the USST International Office who both attended the special occasion on behalf of the University.
Named after the city flower, the Magnolia Award was set up by the Shanghai Municipal Government in 1989 to recognise outstanding foreign nationals for their contribution to the international exchange and urban development of the city. The award is internationally recognised as recognition for outstanding contributions by foreign nationals to the economic and social development of Shanghai.
This year, there are 50 award winners who are from 22 countries.
Professor Ian Gow OBE was appointed Principal of the Sino-British College, USST on 1st January 2009. He has been Vice President of four leading British universities including Universities of Sheffield and Nottingham. From 2003 to 2007, he was Provost and CEO of the University of Nottingham Ningbo, China – China's first independent foreign university campus under the 2003 legislation. He was awarded the Camelia Award from the Municipal Government of Ningbo and the West Lake Award from the Province of Zhejiang for outstanding contribution to higher education. Professor Gow was awarded the OBE in the New Year's Honours List (2007) for his services to British Higher Education in China.
Under the leadership of Professor Gow, the SBC team has made tremendous improvements in terms of the quality of teaching, the quality of students, campus facilities and graduate employment and postgraduate placement. He is committed to providing first-class English language learning environment for students at SBC with the British way of teaching and learning. With Professor Gow’s vision and strategy for campus internationalisation, so far SBC has recruited 150 international students from over 40 countries and regions.
Professor Gow is also committed to expanding and deepening the cooperation with the nine British owner universities of SBC. With his continuous efforts, the University of Sheffield Business Management degree was launched at SBC in 2010. Up to now, the University of Sheffield is the most highly ranked UK university taking part in major Sino-British JV institutions that deliver higher education in mainland China. Three of the 9 UK consortium offer full degrees in Shanghai and two of these, Sheffield (2011) and Huddersfield (2013) were awarded the coveted internationally recognised UK University of the Year awards.
Professor Gow believes that SBC’s mission is to produce internationally minded, culturally aware and socially responsible graduates who can succeed as global citizens. Currently, SBC has achieved employment rate of 97% with a number of students being accepted by top multi-national companies and world-class universities for further study.
Professor Gow was delighted to receive this top honour. He said: “I think this is really a great honour, not just for me but for the entire team at SBC as well as the Northern Consortium (NCUK) UK partner universities and particularly the host university – the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology.”
