One of the advantages for students studying on the UK degree programmes at SBC is that they are provided with various opportunities to have direct conversation with senior academics at degree-awarding universities and are able to gain the most up-to-date knowledge on the courses and development of the universities.
On 16th April, students studying Engineering programmes at SBC and staff in the School of Engineering were invited to join a group of senior delegates from Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) headed by Professor Nigel Weatherill, Vice-Chancellor (President) of the University for Afternoon Tea at the SBC English Tearoom. The event was initiated by LJMU for students currently studying the LJMU degree programmes in Engineering at SBC to meet with the senior staff and have a better understanding about the latest developments of the University.
Other senior delegates from LJMU who attended the afternoon tea event included Dr Edward Harcourt, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (External Engagement), Professor Roger Webster, Dean, Faculty of Arts, Professional & Social Studies, Jane Wang, Head of International and Andrew Rennie, Regional Manager (East Asia).
After the opening address by Professor Ian Gow OBE, Principal of SBC, Vice Chancellor Weatherill gave an introductory talk on the city of Liverpool and the development of Liverpool John Moores University. Following the speeches, students were provided the opportunity to meet and talk to the visiting delegates in groups. Topics of the discussions were mainly about their current study at SBC, job prospects and postgraduate opportunities after graduation.
Students on split-degree programmes planning to complete their degree study at LJMU in the UK after two or three years study in Shanghai also asked questions about campus facilities, student support and student life in Liverpool.
Given LJMU’s renowned excellence in the area of Engineering, in terms of both teaching and research, many final year students are actually now considering applying for postgraduate study at LJMU, the same university from which they will be awarded their Bachelor’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
Dr Gareth Lewis, who has been working at SBC as senior secondee from LJMU for 5 years and currently holds the post of Director of the School of Engineering, had this to say: “I’m glad that our students at SBC are provided with such a great opportunity to have direct communication with the top management at LJMU. LJMU is one of the fastest growing universities in the UK , with a large number of international students, so again I’m glad that Engineering students at SBC can be part of our global community.”
