This autumn, a new cohort of 2013/2014 Chinese and international students arrive at the Sino-British College looking forward to a brand new and wonderful university life.
Two Welcome Ceremonies were hosted on 16 September for all new students. The SBC senior management team, academic and administrative staff attended the ceremonies to offer the warmest welcome for the new 2013/2014 student joining our big family – the Sino-British College.
This year, we have brought in a total of over 600 high school graduates to the SBC, including over 50 international students, which takes the total number of international students in SBC to nearly 150 representing over 20 countries and regions.
Our overseas students see in SBC a great opportunity to study for a UK-accredited degree, while learning Mandarin and experiencing Chinese culture in Shanghai, China’s most modern and dynamic city.
At the same time, judging by the record number of domestic applicants for 2013/2014. SBC has been a popular choice for Chinese students who want to pursue quality western higher education in China. In addition, many applicants who have achieved tier 1 in the Chinese National University Entrance Examination (GaoKao) have been attracted by The Business Management programme offered by University of Sheffield. Furthermore, this year represents in academic terms the highest quality intake of students since SBC was founded 7 years ago.
Vice President of USST and President of Shanghai Publishing and Printing College, Professor Chen Bin, remarked in his opening speech: “The Sino-British College aims to become an established international university college in China producing quality graduates who are professionally competitive. We are very pleased to see the achievements that the College has made in the last 7 years since its establishment.”
Principal of SBC, Professor Ian Gow OBE, remarked in his opening speech that SBC will continue to improve the quality of students, staff and teaching and facilities. He believed that SBC students will be ambassadors for China or for their country and its relations with China in the exciting decade for China and its leading role in the world in the 21st century. He also added that over 94% of this year’s graduates had been offered places for jobs or postgraduate studies within two months of graduating.
It is worthwhile mentioning that we have further invested in campus facilities this year such as in our teaching building, library, laboratory, students’ residences and others. We still continue to improve so as to give the best possible start in their college life to SBC students.
Cindy Prouchandy (France) and Luo Xiaoliang followed with speeches on behalf of all SBC students. They shared their excitement at the opportunities offered by SBC and their raised expectations as to the university life at SBC ahead, a rare chance they all looked forward to with great relish. Cindy mentioned “SBC gives us a chance to understand and discover the world. SBC will bring us many priceless treasures through the integration of her new education philosophies and English teaching resources.”
