On Monday 20 May, a senior academic delegation from Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) visited the Sino-British College in Shanghai. The delegation was warmly welcomed by Professor Ian Gow, Principal and CEO of SBC, and Colin Wanmer, Deputy Principal (academic) and Director of the School of Business and Communication.

The delegation was led by Gudrun Myers, Regional Director and Manager of the University’s China Hub. Members of the delegation included Elizabeth Dempsey, Senior Lecturer and Course Leader of the BA (Hons) in Business & Marketing, Samantha Glove, Principal Lecturer and Academic Leader for Enhancing Student Engagement and Employability, Ian Storer, Senior Lecturer of Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management, concurrently Course Leader of MSc International Human Resource Management, and seven more senior academics from Sheffield Hallam University.

Following previous visits in 2011 and 2012, this is the third visit made by SHU’s large group of academic and administrative staff to the SBC campus. During this visit, the delegation engaged in wide-ranging discussions with Professor Gow on how to further develop strategic relationships between the two institutions. The group also had a lunch meeting with SBC academic staff, who introduced the teaching and learning methods at SBC, including development in academic research, improvement in the overall student study environment and other areas related to academic management. Both sides also exchanged views and ideas on how to improve support for Chinese students both academically and socially.

After the meeting, the delegation met with a dozen SBC students currently applying to study at SHU beginning in September. In the evening, the delegation took part in an SHU Alumni Reunion Party with dozens of SHU Alumni currently working in Shanghai.

Sheffield Hallam University is one of SBC’s partner universities in the UK. University placement statistics indicate that the University has provied a popular choice for SBC students in the last few years. In 2011, 73 students studying 2+2 business degrees at SBC were accepted by SHU. In 2012 the number rose to 119, an increase of over 60% in business-related subjects.

Colin Wanmer, Deputy Principal (Academic) and Director of the School of Business and Communication, commented: “Sheffield Hallam University has been highly supportive in the on-going development of SBC. They always are greatly helpful to students who apply to study at SHU. We look forward to further strengthening this strategic higher educational cooperation with Sheffield Hallam University.”
