On April 11th, students from SBC and USST co-hosted the 2013 Music and Cultural Festival at USST International Culture Park, an event which attracted hundreds of participants. Chen Bin, Vice President of USST, and Professor Ian Gow, SBC Principal and CEO, attended the festival and delivered opening speeches.

Cooperating with a total of five Culture Centers, the British Center, German Center, Nordic European Center, American Center and Japanese Center, two groups of students from the Division of Events Management (EVM) of SBC organized and operated this event with student volunteers from USST. The whole event was designed with the purpose of raising awareness of each culture center through displays of the unique music on offer, and providing exciting cross-culture experiences for all participants.

Each center tried their utmost to exhibit their own unique music culture through various methods. The British Consulate General brought along an informative documentary for the British Center. The movie recorded the dramatic stories of four British bands touring in China. In addition, Mrs. Katy Gow gave a lecture on British Music which explored another side of music culture in Britain. Classical music was unquestionably the ‘main tune’ on offer at the German Center, the Center making use of German giants such as Beethoven and Bach. The USST music group gave an inspired quartet performance of a Mozart serenade, with their pianist performing Beethoven’s Sonata in G major and the first Movement of the famous Moonlight Sonata. A band from the U.S. performed Electronic Soul Music in the American Center, providing extra entertainment when teaching the audience to sing along. For the Japanese Center, members from USST comic club offered a beautiful musical adapted from a Japanese fairy tale. Musicians in the Nordic European Center gave an accordion performance, and various popular hits from Nordic pop music.

The SBC EVM students who organized this festival thanked all the participants and expressed their happiness that the whole event had been well received. They also mentioned that they had learned a lot by operating such a big event. It is always a pleasure, they said, for them to have the opportunity to practice what they have learnt in class.
