On 28th March, the 2013 SBC Career Service Salon was held jointly by the SBC Career Service Development Centre and Year 4 Students majoring in Events Management. The half-day event was comprised of career seminars and an evening gathering which attracted around 130 participants in total, including guests from our industrial corporation partners, prominent alumni of the SBC and students currently studying at the College.
In order to fit different demands for job information, career seminars were held respectively for engineering students, Business students and international students at the SBC. For each seminar, SBC Career Service Development Office invited several experts with rich industrial experience related to the student’s specialty subject.
Engineering students had the opportunity to talk face-to-face with the Director of Campus Recruitment from SKF, a leading global technology provider since 1907, as well as the Director of Human Recourses from Haworth Office Furniture, a world market leader in the design and production of office environments, with headquarters in America, and the Director of Campus Recruitment of Shanghai Hua Hong NEC Electronics Company, Ltd, one of the leaders in the field of IC foundry service in Mainland China.
Business students, meanwhile, learned a great deal from discussions with the Brand Manager of the Bank of China, the Recruiting Manager of Hocres – a hotel equipment & accessories company in Shanghai – and the Director of Human Recourses and Supervisor of Corporation Cooperation at JFPS Group, the leading business performance enhancement company with affiliated partners across the globe.
International students had the opportunity to communicate with the CEO and partners of Ajinga – a Shanghai based start-up company committing to bridging the gap between employers and young job seekers, and the Operation Directors of China Select, a company which provides professional talent assessment solutions for organizations in China.
After these formal career seminars, all guests, alumni and students were able to enjoy themselves at an evening gathering. Mr. Xu, one of the SBC’s prominent alumni, now employed at Haworth, said that he was glad to come to the event and share his experiences on career planning and job hunting with students ready to graduate from the College. John Xu, Senior Consultant at the SBC Career Service Development Centre, sincerely thanked Year 4 students of Events Management for putting so much effort in to making a successful career event. He also said that the career salon was a good way for students to have wide-ranging conversations with the SBC’s alumni and industrial corporation partners, and to learn many things from those professionals.
The group of Year 4 students from Events Management who had organized the event said how glad they were to receive so many positive responds from participants, and expressed their gratitude to the Career Service Development Office for giving them this opportunity. They felt they had learned a lot through running this event, skills such as how to communicate with customers, how to manage on a limited budget and attract more sponsors, and how to segment an event based on potential participants in order to manage the whole event efficiently, and so on.
