The 1st SBC International Open Day was held last Saturday March 16th and the feedback from the audience was positive.

A group of SBC Year 3 Events Management students supported the International Office in running this event. It must have been quite a challenge for them to do so, but the event went very smoothly and was a great success.

In total, there were 43 attendees including 27 students accompanied by their family members and school counselors. It was a very multinational audience with participants coming from Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Russia, Switzerland and Uzbekistan. Distinguished guests included pupils from the following schools: Shanghai United International School, Livingston American School, Shanghai High School International Division, and an energetic group that travelled all the way from Ningbo International School. There was also a delegation from Iran, and several students that came all the way from Russia and India to visit our campus and to take the SBC Entrance Examination.

SBC’s Principal, Professor Ian Gow, O.B.E. gave a captivating presentation which introduced the British Education system and set the scene for what was to follow. Andy Ritchie (Assistant Director to the School of Business and Communication) delivered a superb short-lecture designed to get the students really thinking about the challenge of business, economics and ethics. Andy’s body language and his humorous personality fascinated the students which made the whole business class interesting and lively. Dr. Raymond Ro (PhD in Bio-Medical Engineering and a J.D. in Law) gave an introduction to Engineering which was detailed and clear, and kept the audience focused on the interesting facts and future potential of engineering. After the lunch break and campus tour, Richard Allan gave an excellent introduction to the Events Management programme.
Since a lot of students would like to choose a career related to Events Management, Richard’s lecture seemed to catch their attention.

Following the stimulating lectures, a group of students had produced a short movie about their lives at SBC that was both entertaining and informative, and provided a clear insight into what it is like to be a student at SBC. The style of the movie truly captured the spirit of the students and their own impression of the education experience at SBC.

It was our first such event, being open to all potential international recruits, in contrast to the event held exclusively for the British International School in December. We are confident that these additional activities this year will enhance our international recruitment to SBC for the coming Autumn. There is nothing more convincing to potential recruits than seeing the real thing, and they certainly were treated to that on Saturday.
