The Autumn of 2012 sees a new cohort of Chinese and international students arriving at the Sino-British College with high hopes and expectations for an exciting and new university experience.
The Sino-British College hosted two Welcome Ceremonies on 24th September for all new students joining SBC for the academic year 2012/13. The SBC senior management team, academic and administrative staff and all of our new students attended the ceremonies.
This year more than 700 high school graduates have been accepted by SBC, including over 60 international students, which takes the total number of enrolled students from abroad to nearly 130, representing 30 countries and regions.
Our overseas students see SBC as a great opportunity to study for a UK-accredited degree, while learning Mandarin and experiencing Chinese culture in Shanghai, China’s most modern and dynamic city.
At the same time, the record number of domestic applicants for 2012/13 confirms that SBC is already a popular choice for Chinese students who want to receive quality international higher education in their own country. The Business Management programme offered by the University of Sheffield, one of the leading universities in the UK has attracted many applicants who achieved tier 1 in China’s national university entrance exams (Gaokao). The overall quality of domestic intakes is also continuing to rise rapidly with over 50% of the students reaching tiers 1 and 2 scores in Gaokao.
Principal of SBC, Professor Ian Gow OBE, remarked in his opening speech: “Obtaining a good degree is becoming more and more important in this highly competitive world and especially a degree which also provides you with high-level competence linguistically, equipping you in the two most important languages in the world today, English and of course Chinese.”
He also added that over 97% of this year’s graduates had been offered places for jobs or postgraduate studies within three months of graduating. Professor Gow believes that with support from the highly qualified academic and administrative team at SBC, new students will be in an even stronger position than their predecessors.
Cui Lidong, Pan Muyi, Banu Ilyassova (Kazakh) and Mustafa Osman Ozturk (Turkish) followed with speeches on behalf of all SBC students. They shared their excitement at the opportunities offered by SBC and their raised expectations as to the university life at SBC ahead, a rare chance they all looked forward to with great relish.
