Researchers from the School of Computing and Engineering at the University of Huddersfield have forged an important link in China with the creation of a joint research laboratory in the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST).
This follows a visit to Huddersfield by a senior delegation from USST led by President Professor Xu Xiaoming in October 2011 and a reciprocal visit by Dean Professor Steve Donnelly and Professors Jane Jiang and Alan Myers from the Centre for Precision Technologies (CPT).
This well-equipped laboratory was created using priority research funds provided by the Chinese government and after extensive consultations with colleagues at Huddersfield. This facility will act as a platform for a number of Sino-British collaborative research projects in the field of precision machining and also facilitate staff and student exchange.
Professor Bob Cryan (left), Vice-Chancellor of the University of Huddersfield visited the laboratory in July and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with USST President Xu (right).
Speaking at USST Professor Cryan said: "It was my pleasure to welcome President Xu to Huddersfield in 2011 and in coming here today I am delighted to witness the progress that has been made by USST in such a short time. As both of our universities continue to go from strength to strength it is these types of international partnerships which will see us both making an impact on the international stage".
The University of Huddersfield was recently voted number one in a global survey which asked international students to rate their learning and living experiences. The Guardian Newspaper’s University Guide for 2013 also shows the University of Huddersfield well established in the Premier League of UK universities. In the league table of 120 universities, the University of Huddersfield is in the Top 50 and within 10 places of the universities of Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield, Cardiff and Liverpool.
In research terms Huddersfield is going from strength to strength and this new collaboration builds on Huddersfield’s own centres for excellence, especially the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Centre for Innovative Manufacturing.
SBC has been working closely with the University of Huddersfield, one of the JV partner owners of SBC for nearly seven years. Huddersfield is one of only SBC’s two pioneering UK partner universities officially approved to run degree programmes at SBC.
In July 2012, the second group of SBC, USST students completing a full Huddersfield bachelor’s degree in Events Management entirely in Shanghai successfully graduated with 1/3 of the students receiving First and Upper Second degrees.
