On Tuesday 15 May, a senior academic delegation from the Business School of Sheffield Hallam University (Sheffield Business School) visited the Sin0-British College in Shanghai.
The delegation was led by Kate Morse, Head of International at the Sheffield Business School and Gudrun Myers International Co-ordinator (China). Members of the delegation included Ann Norton, Head of the Department of Management, Rona O'Brien, Head of Department for Finance Accounting and Business Systems, and another eight senior academics from the Sheffield Business School.
Following the visit in May 2011, this is the second visit from the Sheffield Business School with a large group of academic and administrative staff. The aim of these visits is for Sheffield Hallam academic and administrative staff to gain a better understanding of how to improve support for Chinese students both academically and socially and to further develop the strategic relationship between the two institutions.
Sheffield Hallam University is one of SBC’s partner universities in the UK. It has been a popular university for SBC students in the last few years according to the university placement statistics. In 2010, 55 students studying 2+2 business degrees at SBC were accepted by SHU and in 2011 the number rose to 73, an increase of over 30% in business-related subjects. In addition, for the first time, SHU has offered study placements to five 2+2 Engineering students from SBC this year.
The delegation was warmly welcomed by Colin Wanmer, Director, Andy Ritchie, Assistant Director (Teaching & Learning) of the School of Business and Communication, and Heather Nicholls, Head of the Division of Business Management at SBC.
The School Director and Head of Business introduced the visitors to the teaching and learning methods at SBC, including degree courses and subjects, departmental structure, student experience and other academic management-related areas. They were then joined by other SBC Heads of Division and academic staff to exchange views and ideas on a range of topics with regards to improving teaching and learning of Chinese students in an English language learning environment.
After the meeting, the delegation met with SBC students who are currently applying to study at SHU from September.
Colin Wanmer, Director of the School of Business and Communication at SBC said: "We are delighted to meet such a large group of senior academic and administrative staff from Sheffield Business School. This is an excellent opportunity for us to better understand each other as partners in delivering international higher education and also a very good opportunity for students to meet some of the staff who will be teaching and supporting them when they arrive in the UK.
