On the morning of 23 March, a senior delegation from the University of Sheffield visited the Sino-British College.
Members of the delegation included Professor Mark Geoghegan, Faculty Director of Training and External Affairs, Department of Physics and Astronomy; Professor Paul Knepper, Director of Research and Director of International Affairs for the Faculty of Social Sciences; Professor Richard Hogg, Head of Semiconductor Materials & Devices Group, Centre for Nanoscience & Technology; and Tom Rhodes, Team Leader of Learning &Teaching Operations and Management Information.
The University of Sheffield is one of the core partner universities in the SBC consortium, and its tie with the Sino-British College is further strengthened by the launch of its Business Management degree in Shanghai by the Vice Chancellor Professor Keith Burnett in Shanghai in 2010. The initial intake of 60 students for this programme, who were all top students in key high schools around China, were admitted by SBC in September 2011.
As a world class research-led university, the University of Sheffield is renowned for its cutting edge research in Engineering and Architecture, in particular, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Architecture, and in fact, the University ranks Top 10 in the UK for the overall research rating in these areas.
The delegation was met by Professor Ian Gow OBE, Principal of SBC, Dr BK Wong, Director of the School of Engineering and Colin Wanmer, Director of the School of Business and Communication. The delegation also had discussions with academic staff in the Engineering Faculty at SBC.
The visit aimed to discuss various possibilities of further cooperation between the two institutions in degree teaching and in research.
Principal Gow said: "Sheffield University has been extremely supportive in the on-going development of SBC in terms of providing teaching and learning resources for our degree programme needs here in Shanghai, and we look forward to further strengthening this key strategic higher educational alliance with one of the world’s great universities."
The University of Sheffield has won the top prize of University of the Year at the 2011 Times Higher Education Awards.
