On the evening of 29th November, Smart Talk welcomed guest speaker serial adventurer and world record breaker Mark Beaumont. The event was held in the SBC auditorium and attracted an audience of nearly 450, both from within and outside of SBC.

During the talk, Mark shared stories of his experiences during global expeditions and feats of endurance. As a non-stop adventurer, he also talked about breaking the record for cycling around the world by completing 18,297 miles in 194 days.

Mark Beaumont is a fine example of someone who took on the unknown and was able to achieve what others thought was impossible.  During his challenges Mark never gave in and his achievements are proof that there are no limits to what we can achieve.  During Smart Talk, the audience heard fascinating stories about his thrilling challenges and how it has shaped him as a person.  He commented that a good education foundation helps give us the confidence and ability to discover and explore the unknown.

Smart Talk is part of a British Council initiative (Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy) offering a series of master classes, lectures and workshops that have been developed with the aim of giving the Chinese general public an insight into education in the UK. There is a particular focus on how educational experience, inspiration and innovation can encourage creative thinking and active participation.

This was the second time the Sino-British College have hosted Smart Talk with a full house.  Our first successful event was a talk given by Fran Jones, Head of International Development at the London Football Club, Tottenham Hotspur, in October 2010.

Sabrina Yang, Director of Operations at SBC said, "SBC is committed to bringing the best UK educational resources into China for the benefit of Chinese students who wish to receive an international education. Therefore, we are absolutely delighted to work with the British Council and host such exciting and inspirational talks given by high-profile world-renowned speakers. I am sure that both our students and staff have found them extremely helpful."
