On 29th October, the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST), the Chinese founding partner of SBC, celebrated its 105th anniversary.

Since its first establishment in 1906, USST has witnessed rapid development in teaching and research and a huge increase in the numbers of Chinese and international students. Now USST has become a key university of the city of Shanghai with a full spectrum across from science and technology to economics, management and liberal arts.

Professor Ian Gow OBE, Principal and CEO of SBC, was invited to attend the celebration. In his meeting with Professor Xu Xiaoming, President of USST, Professor Gow congratulated USST on its 105th anniversary and the great achievement that the University has made.

In response, President Xu thanked Professor Gow for the full support that he and his team had given for the internationalisation of USST.

In the afternoon, Professor Gow, who has been appointed Special International Adviser to President Xu of USST was a special guest at the opening of the USST International Cultural Park on USST main campus. He was amongst those to take part in the official opening ceremony, alongside senior diplomatic and government officials and USST top management.

Professor Gow also was officially appointed Chairman of the Advisory Board of the new British Cultural Centre in the International Park and Professor Song Chengli was appointed Director of that Centre.

The British Cultural centre is located in one of seven former missionary houses which have been extensively refurbished in the style of the country. The other countries with centres are the USA, Germany, Japan and Australia. The interior design of the British centre was designed by a prominent Scottish architect Crawford Mackenzie. These centres are designed to enhance understanding of their respective countries for staff and students at USST and citizens of Shanghai.
