1.      To create a positive and supportive learning environment by using effective teaching strategies and promoting learning consistent with student needs.

2.      To contribute positively and appropriately as a member of the programme team, School and College in all academic-related activities.

Purpose:

To contribute to the effective provision of specific modules and programmes and to work collaboratively with other academics in the College to develop students’ subject-specific knowledge and study skills so that they can perform effectively on courses in an English-speaking university environment. Teaching should be underpinned by appropriate research and scholarly activity.

To embrace fully the College’s objectives and ensure, with the resources available, the best possible learning experience and progression opportunities for the College’s students.

Key Responsibilities:

1.           To design and teach lessons at the appropriate level and quality as required by the programme syllabus. You may also be required from time-to-time to contribute to or lead modules and programmes.

2.           To work collaboratively with other lecturers to support students in their learning and in the development of appropriate study skills and subject-specific knowledge in mathematics and/or physics and/or engineering and cognate   subjects.

3.           To design and mark formative and summative assessments and monitor students’ learning, in conjunction with other lecturers where appropriate.

4.           To engage pro-actively with partners, viz. NCUK (Northern Consortium UK),  Liverpool John Moores University, and external organisations as required.

5.           To be involved in setting, invigilating,   and marking examinations when required.

6.           To undertake research and scholarly   activity relevant to mathematics and/or physics and/or engineering and to the wider research objectives of the College.

7.           To maintain accurate records of student performance   and of teaching and learning activity. To monitor student attendance and, as   required, to prepare appropriate reports.

8.           To participate in meetings associated with the operation and management of programmes.

9.           To contribute to the activities of the College’s Academic Success Centre, intended to develop students’ independent learning skills and provide general academic support.

10.       To support the College’s overarching themes, i.e. of responsible leadership, enterprise and innovation, cultural empathy, and activities intended to underpin them.

11.       To be responsible for the safekeeping of any equipment, books or other College resources used in connection with academic and administrative activities and to observe all health and safety requirements.

12.       If required, to participate in promotional and marketing activities, regionally, nationally or internationally, related to the programmes offered by the College.

13.       To contribute to the College academic community by participating in its activities including conferences, seminars, discussion groups etc.

14.     To carry   out any other duties commensurate with this post as required by the Head of School or nominee.

Professional / Tertiary Qualifications:

Qualifications: Essential

First degree or equivalent in cognate area; Masters degree; PhD

Qualifications: Desirable

A teaching qualification; Professional body qualification relevant to mathematics,   physics, or engineering.

Essential Skills and Experience:

1.         The ability to contribute to integrated teaching across the curriculum.

2.         Demonstrable ability to undertake research and scholarly activity.

3.         Demonstrable cross-cultural awareness and understanding.

4.         A commitment to teamwork, to working flexibly and to seeking solutions to problems.

5.         Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills including fluency in English.

6.         Competence in the effective use of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT).

 

Preferred Skills and Experience:

1.       Previous   experience of teaching in higher education.

2.       Record of publishing research in international   journals.

3.         Specific experience of education in China.

4.       An understanding of UK higher education and the needs and requirements of international students.

5.         Experience of the development of academic programmes.

6.         Experience of academic assessment and standards and of quality assurance procedures.

7.         Experience of teaching non-native speakers of English.

8.         In the case of engineering, practical industry experience.
