SBC Principal Ian Gow was invited to participate in a recent episode of the ICS (International Channel Shanghai) TV show ‘Culture Matters’, aired at 7 p.m. on Saturday 1st December, in which two hostesses discussed the world of ‘Science Fiction’ with their four guests.
As one of the invited guests, Professor Gow, a long-time fan of Sci-Fi films, shared his own perspectives on Sci-fi movies with the audience. He had, he said, once taught students and staff leadership skills by organizing screenings of the world famous Sci-fi classic, ‘Star Trek’. Profesor Gow gave a special mention to Sir Patrick Stewart, well known for playing the part of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek, who visited SBC in 2010 in his capacity as Chancellor of the University of Huddersfield, one of SBC’s partner universities. In his final comments, Pro.Gow recommended several classic Sci-fi films and TV Series for the audience’s enjoyment, such as Firefly, Serenity and, of course, Star Trek where the key people speak in Chinese.
Amongst the other three guests could be counted a diehard Chinese Sci-fi fan, a Sci-fi writer and a filmmaker currently working on a Sci-fi movie script in Shanghai, who shared their own passions and stories on Sci-fi films and novels.
Some staff and students from the SBC watched the show on TV and said how exciting it was to see familiar faces on the screen, especially that of our Principal. They also felt that the discussion on the exciting and interesting world of Science Fiction was a great way to learn more about western culture.
